California sees 8,610 new coronavirus cases, breaking state's single-day record for 2nd straight day

Source: KTLA

For the second consecutive day, California broke a record for the most coronavirus infections reported — 8,610 cases, according to The Times’ tracker — another troubling sign that COVID-19 is spreading more rapidly in communities across the state.

It was the second time the state has recorded more than 8,000 cases in a single day.

The percent of coronavirus tests coming back positive in California continues to rise — hitting 5.95% Tuesday, a Los Angeles Times analysis found, up from 5.28% a week earlier, and 4.45% a week before that. That’s another indication that disease spread is worsening.

Hopefully we shut down today, or at least start enforcing the mask requirement more. I live in a very liberal area of our county, and even here I feel like the only one who "gets it".

a hundred million, we are not yet at that number. In reality, we might well be, since only about 10% of the population has been tested.

We have a ways to go.

But the funerals haven't let up and I still see them rolling down my street at least once a week (there are a couple of churches up the road).

It is under the radar, since California's governor has been in support of masks, but Trump supporters have been very aggressive in targeting local officials who support masks.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — Public health officers in California have been subjected to threats during the coronavirus pandemic as some residents become frustrated with orders to wear masks and slowly reopen businesses.

Law enforcement in at least five counties, including San Diego, have opened investigations. Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., San Diego County’s Public Health Officer, was personally ridiculed during the public comment portion of Tuesday’s county supervisor’s meeting.

“I don’t mean to pick on you, Ms. Wooten, you could have a thyroid condition for all I know, but when I see you walk up and down to the podium, you don’t look like you’re medically healthy,” said a woman who identified herself as Teresa.

She also gave out Wooten’s home address twice. It was later redacted from the county’s video recording of the meeting to protect the health officer’s privacy.

But apart from grocery clerks there aren't many who are still hyper-vigilant, including older folks outdoors, and there are many who appear to have forgotten the whole thing. The parks and gyms here are crammed and mask-wearing is definitely optional whatever the signs say.

Even if not enforced by local or state officials.

People need to SIP!

Stop going to restaurants, salons, barber shops, or any other unnecessary place.

We just moved out of San Francisco, and we barely had any cases. This was last month.

and I was surprised (Honestly, I was expecting MAGATS from OC and the Central Valley intentionally spreading):
https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/06/30/1004696/theres-not-one-reason-californias-covid-19-cases-are-soaring-there-are-many/

Ethnic disparities
Throughout the state, Latinos make up by far the largest share of cases (56%) and deaths (42%), according to data from the California Department of Public Health. While Latinos make up 39% of the population, whites are a close second at 37% but represent only 17% of covid-19 cases.

These infections appear to be concentrated within low-income communities, where people are often essential workers who can’t do their jobs from home, can’t afford to call in sick and may live in crowded housing conditions, according to information from contact tracing programs as well as other research and reporting. Language, immigration status and financial issues can complicate efforts to successfully reach infected patients or their close contacts in these communities, and convince them to isolate themselves for extended periods.

Early results from a covid-19 screening project in San Francisco’s heavily Hispanic Mission neighborhood found that 95% of those who tested positive were “Hispanic or Latinx” (the difference is explained here). And 90% of infected patients said they couldn’t work from home.

People are becoming cavalier
Another major factor is that people are ignoring safety practices, according to a state breakdown of counties experiencing rising cases. As regions relax stay-at-home rules, families, friends, and strangers are increasingly gathering in homes, bars, restaurants, and other venues. Too often, they’re not wearing masks or staying far enough away from each other, said Mark Ghaly, secretary of California’s Health and Human Services Agency, during the Monday press conference.

Los Angeles County has become the nation’s largest epicenter of the disease, with nearly 98,000 confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University’s coronavirus tracking map.

no indoor dining. Lots of beaches closed, but some parks remain open...not like it once was, but definitely a step back, and in the right direction.
