DeSantis says Florida 'not going back' on reopening as COVID-19 cases surge

Source: The Hill

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said Tuesday that his state is “not going back” on reopening as thousands of new COVID-19 cases continue to be reported every day.

DeSantis told reporters that the state will not follow Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) move to pause reopening, according to Axios.

“We're not going back, closing things,” he said. “I don't think that that's really what's driving it. People going to a business is not what's driving it. I think when you see the younger folks — I think a lot of it is more just social interactions, so that's natural.”

When reporters asked if DeSantis would encourage people to stay home, he said social distancing was being recommended throughout the reopening process and that keeping the elderly and vulnerable safe was Florida’s priority.

Why, that's like taking your foot off the gas as you approach a red light. Not a very manly thing to do.

There are way too many non compliance folks out there to contaminate any new shutdown plan....The virus is already well seeded nationally...I suggest, those who want to survive...wear a mask, hunker down, plan any out of home events like store, pharmacy, essential needs with an organized list, short visit, use hand sanitizer/ often when out...time the events during low populated times....choose grocery stores that are observed cleaning shopping carts all the time...

The fact that it is known as evidence of many " Karen rage" shopping videos...won't wear a mask... it just take one to contaminate an area...and we have many who are doing just that...

but it's hard to see how a state that relies heavily on tourism expects to lure vacationers to their diseased cesspool. Who would go there now?

who own or rent homes in Florida. They are major contributors to the economy. If the Canada/US border remains closed into 2021 (as I believe it will) Florida will suffer greatly.
DeSantis is an idiot.

I suspect that those Canadian snowbirds unencumbered wth Florida real-estate will be spending the cold months of 2020-2021 in Cuba, and there won’t be a blamed thing that the Sunshine State and National Dumb(Cluck)istan National Party (aka the GOP) can do anything about it.

If it were, he'd realize that "opening up" doesn't magically generate demand, certainly not enough to sustain most businesses. No, his only concern is pleasing trump. That's the full scope of it.

Have mandatory Covid testing stops on northbound I95 and I75. He realizes that this will kill the tourist business, right?

from the Pentagon that we are now a no travel zone. Unfuckingbelievable! We really are a 3rd world nation. I’m back to hiding at the house. I have a job with the school system that starts in August. If it’s not mandatory masks I’m not sure I’m going to take it.

With that approach, Florida will shut itself down, so to speak.

Their will be no choice as the situation becomes a catastrophic emergency. People will be panicking, dying in the streets, etc.

This is going to be bad, especially thanks to a Trump sycophant like that. That blood, so to speak, is on his hands.

have so many expendable Black and Brown people they can kill with this disease. Helps the rich stay rich, by pleasing the stock market carrion -eaters, and improves Trump's re-election prospects by thinning out the voting roles.

It's a feature, not a bug.
