Trump in 'fragile' mood and may drop out of 2020 race

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Mosby (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: The Independent

Donald Trump may drop out of the 2020 presidential race if he believes he has no chance of winning, a Republican Party operative reportedly told Fox News.

The claim comes in a report in the president’s favourite news outlet that cites a number of GOP insiders who are concerned about Mr Trump’s re-election prospects amid abysmal polling numbers.

Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, currently holds an average lead of nine points over the incumbent, according to a tracker of 2020 polls by RealClearPolitics.

Crucially, Mr Trump has lost support from older white voters — typically a bedrock of support for the Republican Party and a group that was crucial to his narrow 2016 victory. Mr Trump is also trailing the former vice president in almost all the swing states.

If Trump deludes himself into thinking that Russia will be a safe haven, he'll get into more trouble. Russia will be moved to strip Trump of all of his assets and leave him a pauper if they don't arrest him on trumped-up charges and let him rot in prison. He still owes the oligarchs hundreds of millions, perhaps more. If he seeks asylum in Russia, they'll call in his loans and he'll be a sitting duck.

Trump is hated everywhere. He'll have no safe haven once he's out of office.

Those of us living in the reality-based universe will believe he'll drop out of the race when he resigns. Even if he doesn't resign but claims he won't run, I still won't believe that until someone else is nominated, or maybe until the ballots are printed. And even then, I don't put it past him to run a write-in campaign.

Until I see the resignation speech, these kinds of reports are just so much BS. Not even trial balloons. Just BS. Not even worthy of skepticism. Just ignore them. Like the man himself, this is a distraction.

This is a no-win for them. If the Republican puppet-masters somehow forced him out, he would turn his demented base loose on them, and R turnout in the election would plummet. We're talking 500 electoral college votes for Biden and 60+ Senate seats. Trump would burn the entire party down on the way out, to get back at them.

On the other hand, if Trump remains the nominee and he keeps tanking in the polls, he might decide on his own to take down the Republicans, because he would see them as disloyal, and that's worse than being Democrats. He would begin to plan his post-POTUS life, and he's always wanted to run a media empire with a bunch of fans who worship him. That way, he could keep blaming the Republicans for being mean to him while spreading crazy conspiracy bullshit about Biden.

Trump's ego--though it may be periodically fragile--is massive. The threat of criminal accountability once he's out of office? It's real and coming to a theater near you.

So though I'd love to see this for the health of the country, I'm not counting on it. We need to whip his ass at the ballot box.

criminally exposed if the DOJ is taken over by a democrat. The simple thing for him would be resign with a full pardon for all crimes and no election loss. Short of that, he fights the election process until Biden is inaugurated He will win, steal, delay, or negate the election.

The RNC cannot afford to lose one statehouse in the election before redistricting happens. If President Plutonium keeps on the way he is, no one who doesn’t already have his Trump tattoo is going to go to the polls...which is going to turn lots of statehouses blue, because this year Democrats will vote heavily.

I believe the RNC has had a come-to-Jesus moment with the fat bastard: either you guarantee us victory in November or you get the hell out of the race.

I can see this happening because Trump often just gives up on things leaving others holding the bag if he doesn't feel whatever project is benefiting him any more.

On the other hand, those occasions are not that widely-known unless you have a reason to be studying Trump. There's no getting around being the ultimate quitter when it comes to dropping out of the race. His ego won't allow for that, and he's already setting up a narrative that mail-in votes are automatically fraudulent in order to have an excuse - in general for losing or for not giving up the office.

Republicans must be so proud.

Cut and run, if true, will leave his party in a vacuum with no candidates who have been vetted by voters in the primaries. Pence was never a viable candidate on his own.

This would be good for Dems and Biden, but a total screw job for the GOP, and unfair for Republican voters. A betrayal of trust. Then again, they could have seen it coming. He's screwed every business partner he ever had, crashed every deal, defaulted on his loans. As a business man, his record was not a secret.

I too am skeptical, but cut & run would not be a surprise.
