Rolling Stones warn Trump not to use their songs - or face legal action

Source: BBC

The Rolling Stones have warned US President Donald Trump that he could face legal action if he continues using their songs at his campaign rallies.

A statement from the band's legal team said it was working with the performing rights organisation, the BMI, to stop the unauthorised use of their music.

The Trump campaign used the song You Can't Always Get What You Want at last week's rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

<snip>

In a statement released on Saturday, representatives for the group said that "further steps to exclude" Mr Trump from using Rolling Stones material in future presidential campaigning was necessary after previous "cease and desist directives" had been ignored.

for people like him. They have nothing in common, and the band stands for something completely different. Use Nugent or some other crock!

I HAD a friend that listened to the Grateful Dead, Phish and Rage Against The Machine constantly, but was a big Bush voter and then a TrumpHumper.

Why? Those bands lyrics and presence are completely opposite of who they are.

It was always weird to me!

Plus, quite a few of them are smokers, but love Reagan. Figure yourselves out!

But Born in the USA came out in '84 and Reagan used it for his reelection campaign. You may have seen clips of daddy Bush on stage during the playing of the song. Bruce really drove home the fact that he absolutely did not want him using it and how Ronnie had no clue to the songs true meaning.

At least the people there understand that as the message, I'd imagine. I mean, to the extent that their brains function well enough to form such complex thoughts. Which is probably a relatively small percentage.

Whoever wants to use it is free to do so as long as they pay for it. Think of a juke box at a hamburger joint who ever puts the quarter in gets to pick the song whether they are KKK or SCLC.

In this case it is likely part of the omnibus billing by the venue.

It's part of the ritual that the band's issue the stop and desist, the band gets good PR and makes the politician look bad.

But from what I've read for a long time is that even though they would get paid they have the choice to deny a certain person or venue from getting that blanket license and using Stones music. Would a group want a bunch of Trump NAZI's playing their music at some get together even if they paid for a license?

Even if Trump bought a license Stones still have the final say. I thought early on in 2016 he was playing something by Aerosmith and they made him stop using the song.
