MADISON - President Donald Trump during a cable TV interview in Green Bay suggested without evidence that a Wisconsin lawmaker was "rooting on" protesters before they assaulted him -- contrary to multiple eye-witness, video and audio accounts of events outside the state Capitol on Tuesday.

Trump visited Wisconsin Thursday in the second of two campaign stops this week to shore up support with the Republican base ahead of the November election.

His Thursday stop came two days after protests led to destruction of the state Capitol grounds and at least three assaults, including a suspected hate crime and the beating of a state senator.

During the interview taped in Green Bay, Trump decried the violent demonstrations by pointing out that state Sen. Tim Carpenter was gay and speculated he was likely egging on the destructive actions by protesters, who toppled two iconic statues that honored women's suffrage and an abolitionist who died during the U.S. Civil War.

"The person they beat up was a Democrat who happened to be gay and he was probably out there rooting them on or something because Democrats think it's wonderful they're destroying our country," Trump said in response to a question from an audience member who asked what the president was doing to quell violence.
