New York Gov. Cuomo to other states: 'You played politics with this virus, and you lost'

Source: CNBC

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized other state leaders’ response to the coronavirus pandemic Thursday, saying some states who rushed to reopen their economies were playing politics.

Cuomo, a Democrat, was asked by CNN’s Alisyn Camerota about comments made by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, who said the state’s quarantine on New Yorkers earlier this year “saved lives” and reduced the spread of the virus.

“I say to them all look at the numbers,” Cuomo said in response, referring to conservative states seeing a rise in Covid-19 cases. “You played politics with this virus, and you lost. You told the people of this state, you told the people of this country, the White House, ‘Don’t worry about it. Go about your business. This is all Democratic hyperbole.’”

“Now you see 27 states with the numbers going up. You see the death projections going up. You see the economy going down,” Cuomo said. “It was never politics. It was always science.”

Only a few months ago, Rick Scotts and other Republican members of Congress were happy to blame Democratic governors with densely populated cities for the high number of cases in their states. To add insult to injury, Republicans then jumped on the Trump bandwagon to reopen quickly even before cases began to decline.

1) Scott is repugnant in every sense of the WORD: physically, morally, emotionally and intellectually. Just a complete dirt bag.

2) I like Cuomo a lot but he needs to measure his words a little more carefully IMO. I live in Michigan and we all know the trials and tribulations we've gone through the last few months. We have rednecks and RWNJ's that NY doesn't have to deal with. Whitmer has done a helluva job while fending off their utter lawlessness and gutless assholery, if you will. She really knows when to clam up and that time is now. She hasn't said much lately except warning everyone yesterday that if we let our guard down, we'll suffer a second wave. My daughter is 17 and a Jr. in high school, she works at the YMCA and is bummed she can't go back to work but more than understands, as it's TOO dangerous. (we wouldn't let her anyway)

Back to Cuomo...this is no time to throw a shot across the bow, be it DeSantis, Ducey, Abbott or whomever. Hell, California is spiking horribly and Newsome has done everything humanly POSSIBLE to stem the tide. It's a nation divided, with NO real national leadership and we are 4 months and 1 week away from starting over and trying to unite. Gonna be a LONG rode back due to tOrange Clown and all his asshole minions that have enabled him, but it's possible. Joe will have to have the absolute best and brightest ever work in his administration because as I said the road back will be long and painful.

people need to be a bit humble when it comes to how much control anybody has over who and how many will get sick. You can manage it to a point, but it's a microbe you can't see in a complex environment. Our leaders have to be competent AND a little bit lucky with this thing.

He handled the unprecedented virus attack systemically and methodically about as well as anyone could, certainly better than trump humper DeSantis, who is now eating his words that he criticized NY with as his infection rates soar.

According to the WorldOMeter site right now

NY: Total Cases = 414,274 Total Deaths = 31,373
FL: Total Cases = 114,018 Total Deaths = 3,329

FL has 27% of NY's cases and 10.6% of it's deaths

Per Capita:

NY has 21,296K cases per 1M pop and 1,613 deaths per 1M pop
FL has 5,309 cases per 1M Pop and 155 deaths per 1M pop

To date, FL has fared much better. Obviously, FL is seeing a spike while NY has gotten past theirs. We'll see what the comparison looks like in a couple of months.

viral phenomenon coming in from Europe through it's international airport. It was able to handle it systematically and methodically—NY didn't just flatten the curve, it chased it down the backside of the curve with it's methods. Florida should've watched and learned.

Instead Florida allowed beaches to stay open during spring break (college kids came and took the infection back to their states and families), never required masks and re-opened way too early. They also stopped reporting their actual cases, fired the woman in charge of reporting in fact. Now their infection rates are soaring—9000 cases just reported for yesterday.

Scott was attributing the numbers to New York being mismanaged, rather than the fact that it was hit early and it is densely populated. Florida had the benefit of seeing what was happening in other States, but rather than using that lead time to prepare, you have Florida politicians excusing their inaction and arguing that the numbers were simply because New York was mismanaged. Now, as Florida's monthly case numbers start to go up, does Rick Scott's logic still hold?

Remember that Scott was arguing against federal aid in favor of Trump. so I don't think I would be siding with Scott over Cuomo.

Cuomo's courage to do what needed doing, despite criticism and mocking. New cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are all down dramatically in NY, thanks to Cuomo's management under extraordinary conditions. Numbers continue to go down here as we open up in NY according to regions and to meeting criteria for a safe opening.

Florida's cases have not gone down, yet the state opens as cases rise. It will get worse.

No other state, including Florida, has the nature of problems that NYC faced. Largest city, extremely dense living and working space, heavy reliance on public transportation out of necessity.

As numbers rise around the country, I fear for the states that lack leadership in following the science on getting the infections under control. At the same time, I'm glad to be in NY and hope we keep the control that we worked so hard to get.

While Trump had sorta somewhat a little bit closed down some flights from China, the virus came here from Europe.

Trump and his team did nothing about that, apparently thinking viruses stay in one country.

Cuomo, or any governor, doesn't have the power to stop international flights.

FL and NY are at different points of the curve (and with different population densities, would likely have different results anyway), but the point is that FL failed to take appropriate actions given the severity of the problem. Whatever their case and death counts once they reach peak, they largely could have been avoided. Every state had warning because it hit WA and NY first. This is particularly egregious because bad decision making (on both the federal and state level) also increased interstate travel, which will facilitate the continued spread everywhere. When I look at where NY, NJ and CT are right now, I realize that the entire country could be there if the right decisions were made. Instead, we have a prolonged first wave, which will likely overlap with the beginning of the second wave.

AT ALL!

They had to know this shit was going to blow up (or maybe they are just stupid) with the way they are handling it.

Did they think they could successfully hide the eventual numbers? I know they tried! Unless they want us all dead, I don't get it. They may very well get dead, too.

This is so odd! Repubs can't do anything correctly.

Only a few short months ago, they had the chance to remove him, but oh no.

Well, they (and the nation) lost that gamble, big time because we do have the major catastrophe, that red don is utterly incapable of handling well.

as soon as the first, known hotspot of cases surfaced in that Westchester County suburb. NYC's international airport was the portal from Europe for the virus which flowed in while trump was stupidly denying that cruise ship on the other coast to discharge it's fifteen cases because he didn't want to "double" the country's infection rate. Stupid is as stupid does.
