Discord Just Shut Down the Biggest 'Boogaloo' Server for Inciting Violence
Source: Vice News
By Tess Owen
Discord, a platform popular with gamers, has shut down one of the largest servers used by followers of the anti-government boogaloo movement after it was exposed in a VICE News article.
Boogaloo is code for civil war which is the ultimate goal of this insurgent movement thats pulled in hardline libertarians, anti-government extremists, online shitposters and white nationalists. Adherents are often known as Boogaloo Bois, and they've been showing up to anti-lockdown and anti-police brutality protests clad in their uniform of Hawaiian shirts and tactical gear.
The movement has also drawn in active-duty service members of the U.S. military, which VICE News reported on Wednesday. The article incorporated screenshots from the innocuously-named Citizens of Liberty or CLO Discord server that showed users offering their military expertise to help advance the goals of the Boogaloo movement.
Discords Trust & Safety team looked into the server after VICE News published, and determined that it violated their community guidelines for threatening and encouraging violence. Later on Wednesday night, Discord took action and removed the server and deleted the accounts of all 2,258 members.

(32,626 posts)don't know what to think about Discord removing the server. They had to know before the article came out, right?

(495 posts)A proper, functional domestic security agency needs that information to investigate a legitimately dangerous movement.

(14,955 posts)It is copied in so many ways to make sure that the only thing of value, your personal information, is kept safe to abuse.
I don't care if the FBI comes in with degaussers and sledgehammers. This information is stored many places.
For example, most largish internet companies do something called "sentiment analysis". This is really just building machine-learning models that try to understand all the gibberish that is posted on their pages.
In order to do this, they need to codify the words, phrases, meta-data into easy-to-process packets. Nobody (and frequently not even their data geeks) can decode what's in this model. But it does include your specifics. And can be re-used. Think facial recognition. Lots of pixels smeared onto hundreds of layers but that can be turned into your face.
Long reply. I never delete anything. I archive it, I zip it, I store it in version-control repositories, I have 20TB+ of backup disks stored in multiple physical locations.

(24,104 posts)if Trump wins a second term and decides DU are traitors, do you want your info turned over to William Barr's FBI?

(21,034 posts)That doesn't mean we shouldn't hold military members advocating violence on U.S. citizenry accountable.
Boogaloo Boys advocate for and commit crimes. We at DU do not do either of these things. One list is legitimate. One list is not.

(42,862 posts)Was this a subscription service of some kind? Did people play games on the server? Or is it just that "gamers" (in whatever form they come in) just happened to congregate at this particular social network server?

(3,171 posts)You can use it to stream games so others can watch as you play, for instance. Or you can set it up so that other people on the same server can see what game you're currently playing, but not your actual screen. It also has voice-over-IP functionality, plus a slew of other features. It does have a "boost" feature that allows you to pay money for services above and beyond the standard features. It's a pretty nice program, honestly.
My buddies and I use it for voice communications during our online D&D games, as well as other games. We also have different channels for different topics, such as humorous memes, cute animal pictures, video game news, etc.

(2,260 posts)Fills a lot of roles for gamers. Mostly the online games. I have an account for a game I play or played I suppose is more accurate. From the server/account I'm on there was very little to no craziness like this. Some pro-trumpers but you kind of had to search around for that stuff (was hidden away in sub-sections like meme off the day, users pictures etc) Each Guild had their own section so we were pretty isolated. You had to get an invite to join. We discussed tactics for the game, what materials to use and there were pointers for the noobs. Could also see what others in our group were playing to get an idea for other things to try.
Discord by and of itself is pretty innocuous but rwnj's can screw up pretty much anything.

(3,072 posts)... I play World of Tanks games there, clans/teams use Discord server so they can use voice and audio for teamwork while in platoon matches, tournaments, etc...
I mention this so all the good folks here know and understand why a gamer would use Discord servers for gaming. Usually less lag in the games, too.
That being said, I have seen little to no political commenting there for the past 3 months I have been a member. Although there are anti Trump rants once in a while in the Discord group text chat... nothing big other than, "trump sucks, really messed things up..." and that is about all I have seen.
