The coronavirus surge is real, and it's everywhere
Source: Axios
The coronavirus pandemic is getting dramatically worse in almost every corner of the U.S.
The big picture: The U.S. today is getting closer to the worst-case scenario envisioned in the spring a nationwide crisis, made worse by a vacuum of political leadership, threatening to overwhelm hospitals and spread out of control.
Nationwide, cases are up 30% compared to the beginning of this month, and dramatically worsening outbreaks in several states are beginning to strain hospital capacity the same concern that prompted the nationwide lockdown in the first place.
This is the grimmest map in the eight weeks since Axios began tracking the change in new cases in every state.

(46,057 posts)1. Trump wanted to re-open the country on his timetable, not that of the virus.
2. People* wanted to get haircuts and have their hair dyed.
3. Young folk wanted to go out in large numbers and drink alcohol recklessly.
4. People were bored and wanted to go shopping for stuff they really didn't need.
5. Governors of states couldn't "sell" the dangers of the virus long enough to control its spread.
6. People didn't want to breathe through masks or wear them.
7. People felt quarantine was like being in prison, or grounded in the tradition of adolescence.
8. People didn't like being told what to do. True Libertarians.
8A. If the same people in #8 are told what to do by their Churches, then that's different. But the churches insisted that they would only be true Christians if they congregated together instead of seeking a one-on-one relationship with Jesus and their God.
9. Today's families are uncomfortable being together for long stretches of time.
10. People didn't want to cook in their kitchens. They wanted to go out.
11. People didn't believe there was an invisible virus that could kill you and if it didn't kill you, it could mess up your body permanently.
12. The subset of People who have the virus, feel no symptoms (asymptomatic), and therefore they don't believe they're communicating the virus to others, risking THEIR lives.
Add more if you wish.
* The term "people" is not all inclusive. It's certain people out of the American population. And let's face it, even if you yourself are being vigilant and careful, the virus can't truly be contained without the help and cooperation of the others. We're f**ked.
Good start on a list. Yeah, sadly, it's far from all inclusive.

(15,535 posts)They both speak to some serious flaws in our societal trends. Today's houses are bigger than ever and the families are smaller than ever. Also, because of our national obsession with home improvement, people's kitchens are spectacular with their subzero refrigerators and granite countertops and yet families are eating out more than ever (prior to Covid of course).
You are right. Today's families aren't really all that family oriented. Everyone is sequestered in their rooms with their own devices/TV's. Siblings rarely have to share a room any more. Some of the most important lessons I learned growing up in a large family were how to share, how to negotiate with a sibling for what you wanted, how to divide the chores of cleaning a shared bedroom, and the ultimate lesson was how important it was to learn to get along with others.
With regard to health matters, not too many people dismissed the recommendations of experts when it came to polio, measles, mumps, whooping cough, chicken pox.

(21,417 posts)which, by definition, depends on the votes of ordinary people.
Taken to its logical conclusion, the idea that Americans are too stupid to vote is a discounting of democracy itself and the belief that ordinary people can govern themselves. But, the people do have to be informed, accurately, reliably, and consistently. Public education and reliable media are essential.

(8,908 posts)unfortunately, the voting public is largely not educated on the issues.
They instead hear the 3-word bumpersticker.
I have a RW friend, who simply loves Pendejo45.
She keeps claiming that everything that Pendejo45 does is great for America.
So I ask her to name one thing he's done and she never can.
Last time I spoke with her, she said "I hate to tell you, but Soros is funding the protests & riots".
I laughed at her and told her to watch or read something other than Fox or Breitbart.
When Pendejo45 told everyone to go out and don't wear masks, guess what, she does it?

(21,417 posts)I know that people ignore complex issues and don't want to get into depth on them. Others don't understand the issues even when they try to go beyond superficial 3wird bumper stickers.
So it's up to us to present the core of the issues in terms that people understand. For some, that means simple slogans. For others, it means more details and facts, according to what they can absorb. We need to do a good job of showing people how issues and votes affect them. Sometimes we need to be blunt.
Example: I live in an apt building for seniors. A RW tenant approached me in the lobby without a mask, in spite of the signs everywhere reminding people to wear them in public areas. I told her to stand back 6 feet and asked where her mask was. She said she didn't have to wear one and didn't care if she died. So I bluntly said I didn't care if she died, either. But also told her that she has no right to expose other people just because she doesn't care about herself. I gave her a graphic description of how covid patients die, alone and gagging and gasping for air. She hasn't been in the hallways since then.
Make the message sink in.

It's Going Away': Trump Plays Down Coronavirus At Arizona Rally As Cases Surge In The State
Source: Forbes
Its going away, Trump said of the virus, which he referred to as the plague.
Trump stressed the need to reopen the country and end lockdown measures put in place to mitigate the spread of the virus, which is still on the rise in 26 states, including a considerable surge in Arizona.
People get sick from the other. Not just the virus. People get sick from all of the other things that happen. You know what I mean, Trump said, declaring, we gotta open up!
Ticking off nicknames for the virus, Trump referred to it as Wuhan virus, Chinese flu and kung flu to raucous applause, the latter of which has been criticized as racist, including by White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway who referred to it as very offensive in March.

THEY are our national treasures. And they are disappearing. Trump is using the virus to kill them. He hates people with integrity and feels good when they disappear. If those who dont have integrity lose their lives as well, thats okay, too. They wont be asking him for favors.
For Trumpy, he can maintain POWER by killing. Its the one rule of survival practiced by barbarians throughout history. Trumpy is in their company.

Masks became political or rather, some rugged individualistic thats america moronic badge. To die. En masse.
We failed at the most basic, easy precaution.

(2,022 posts)This applies to deaths more than confirmed case. But anyhow, I believe that in some states, a high percentage of COVID-19 deaths were in nursing homes. For Ohio I think it was about 70%. This is an area that perhaps can be controlled better, in terms of frequent staff testing, use of masks by staff and suppliers, etc.
