Embarrassing: Trumps endorsement rejected by Republicans in landslide defeat for seat once held by his chief of staff
Published 8 hours ago on June 23, 2020
Voters in North Carolina went to the polls on Tuesday for a special election to fill the vacancy created when Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) resigned from Congress to serve as Trumps chief of staff.
Trump had repeatedly urged his supporters to back Lynda Bennett in the race for North Carolinas 11th congressional district.

(5,657 posts)Read the CNN article and this kid seems to be a young Donald at this point. A real estate investment company owner and motivational speaker. His name is Madison Cawthorn.
From CNN:
Cawthorn -- who was partially paralyzed in a 2014 car crash -- is a "constitutional conservative" who is "committed to defending the values of faith, family and the freedom that have made America great," according to his website.

Hope theres a D running. Not in NC so not informed. But this guy could be scary!

(26,260 posts)His bio said he was home schooled, and in 2014 Mark Meadows nominated him to the Naval Academy. Then he had that car accident. Nothing about any further education/degrees. And, if Meadows thought so highly of him, why didn't get get his endorsement?
According to this bio, "He challenges people across the nation to have faith, work hard, play by the rules and pursue the American dream." Yet, he's a big trump* supporter who has never had faith, worked hard, played by the rules, and who GRIFTED. Not my idea of the 'American Dream'.

(3,166 posts)This is not the district I live in, but it's close. A little history: this district is in the southwestern part of the state. Mountainous, mostly rural district that does contains two state universities (Western Carolina and UNC-Asheville) and did contain the city of Asheville (the largest city in the mountains). However, after the Republicans gained control of our General Assembly in 2010, they gerrymandered Asheville out of the district, which led to the election of Mark Meadows.
After almost a decade of lawsuits and several rulings against them for gerrymandering, the Republicans finally gave up last year, and are essentially handing Democrats 2 pickups this fall. One in Wake County and one in Forsyth and Guilford Counties. They also put Asheville back into the 11th, which makes it swingy.
The 11th has a weird dynamic. Asheville and its surrounding towns are quite liberal - an oasis in the desert. Jackson County, where Western Carolina is, leans Democratic as well. The far southwestern areas near Murphy are kind of a mix of ex-hippies and strange, ultra right-wing militia types. This is the area where Eric Rudolph hid out after the Atlanta bombings in the late 90's.
The other counties are small and mostly rural. The reservation for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee is in the district, as well as the NC part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
Moe Davis is a perfect candidate for this district. He can't be labelled as some "pansy libtard" because of his military background. Cawthorn is young and inexperienced. Plus, he's a young version of Meadows and Trump. If Davis does well in Asheville and Buncombe County, he has a good chance to take this one.

Don't give a damn about his faith as it is unnecessary for holding office. Don't give a damn about his family as that is also irrelevant. Will wait, probably a very long time, for his definition of freedom.
Word salad, dog whistle bullshit.

(17,912 posts)Righty extreme is par for the course. Venture outside the Asheville / Buncombe County bubble and it's like stepping into another world. Many would happily go back to the 16th century....witch burning, religious wars....all the old timey stuff they loved so well.
Use to live there. Had enough. Left.

(2,312 posts)It's an R+14 district on Ballotpedia, meaning that in a normal year, the Republican can be expected to win by 14 percentage points, or about 57-43.
That's a steep hill to climb, but you'd think any sane person who looks at the candidates' resumes would choose Moe Davis. But some districts ...

(3,166 posts)Its boundaries were changed last year. Asheville was put back into the district, which changes the dynamic.
