Supreme Court blocks Trump from ending DACA

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)The Supreme Court on Thursday blocked the Trump administration's attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama-era program that protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the US as children from deportation.

The 5-4 ruling was written by Chief Justice John Roberts and joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor.

The opinion marks the second time in a week when the Supreme Court -- bolstered with two of President Donald Trump's nominees -- has ruled against the Trump administration.

The court's ruling will allow the DACA recipients to continue to renew membership in the program that offers them work authorization and temporary protection from deportation.

Supreme Court rules against Trump administration attempt to end DACA, a win for undocumented immigrants brought to U.S. as children

By
Robert Barnes
June 18, 2020 at 10:05 a.m. EDT

President Trump has tried since 2017 to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which President Obama authorized through executive action in 2012 to protect law-abiding immigrants brought by their parents. The program does not provide a path to citizenship, but it does allow recipients to work legally.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Nothing in the decision by the majority or the dissenting opinions is about the good or bad of DACA - this is all hinging on technicalities, the majority says that the Trump admin did not line up all of their ducks in a row and needs to go back and try again (if Trump wakes up tomorrow and feels like it he could say try again and this time the agency will have its ducks in a row and future court challenges will have NOTHING to hang on at all - the only hope in him NOT trying again is enough people yelling at him about the costs in votes during
an election year).

The dissenting opinions are basically that no - the trump admin was close enough to having its ducks in a row proceduraly, or that we're heading down a bad path where one admin can put in an executive order that another administration has to later meet high bars to undo.
The dissent from Thomas is something I'll be thinking back to when Trump issues 30 executive orders in January just before Biden takes over and Biden has to take 12 months to undo them slowly and carefully because of the precedent set here today over Thomas' dissent.

It would be hazardous to try to put too much faith in it, yet, as the adversary is relentless, but it's beyond imagination by now!

May I add the original version of the same song, same choir, different singers, which appeared during the living hell of the VietNam war? It was the transcendent moment for millions, undoubtedly, hearing it for the first time. It had the power to lift a person's entire spirit out of the moment, out of the world, for just that time.

I am certain anyone who loves it will drop everything to hear it through to its end every time!

Thank you, so much, for celebrating a totally shocking moment in this country's history with exactly the song which transfixed so many human beings then, during the darkness in the world.

Can't replace the original, although the current ones are ideal, too.

Besides. DACA gets these people into the legal economy, where they might otherwise not be. And Robert's isnt dumb enough to shut off a tax and economic revenue stream that's just sitting there pumping tax dollars into the system.
