Beijing's new outbreak raises fears for rest of the world

BEIJING (AP) — China raised its emergency warning to its second highest level and canceled more than 60% of the flights to Beijing on Wednesday amid a new coronavirus outbreak in the capital — a sharp pullback for the nation that declared victory over the virus in March and a warning for the rest of the world about how tenacious this virus really is.

New infections spiked in India, Iran and U.S. states including Florida, Texas and Arizona as authorities struggled to balance restarting economic activity without accelerating the spread of the pandemic.

European nations, which embarked on a widescale reopening this week, looked on with trepidation as the Americas struggled mightily to contain the first wave of the pandemic and Asian nations like China and South Korea reported new outbreaks, giving rise to fears of a second wave.

Chinese officials described the situation in Beijing as “extremely grave.”

If we're collectively too stupid to get this under control, the only way other countries will be able to protect themselves is to prohibit travelers from the USA.

4. Has C-19 mutated? I haven't seen anything documented, but some are claiming it has and poses an

even higher rate of transmission. If that's the case, this is looking extremely serious (not that it wasn't already).

to another seafood market. Don't know if these is/was a "wet" market, but you would think by now the Chinese government would ban them.

8. That is really tough for the Chinese people. It's part of the culture (for better or worse). China

will do the best they can to lock it down, but this virus is proving to be impossible to "contain."

9. Culture can change

American culture has certainly changed over time. Here in America, women don't wear fur coats much anymore because we have decided we don't like animals being killed to make them.

China's a dictatorship, if these zoonotic diseases were rare or just stayed in China, ok, but they seem to be happening with more frequency and the global economy ensures they won't stay inside China's borders.

10. I would certainly hope it will change. It all starts from the top. We can't even get people to

wear masks in the pandemic, because the bahavior is not modeled or encouraged by leadership. And as far as environmental protection goes, they are hellbent on reversing all that as well. All of it.
