(Reuters) - New coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in record numbers swept through more U.S. states, including Florida and Texas, as most push ahead with reopening and President Donald Trump plans an indoor rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Alabama, Florida and South Carolina reported a record number of new cases for the third day in a row on Saturday, which many state health officials partly attribute to gatherings over the Memorial Day holiday weekend in late May.
Oklahoma reported record new cases for the second day in a row, and Alaska did so for the first time in weeks. Arizona and Nevada reported a near-record number of new cases.
In Louisiana, which had been one of the earlier virus hotspots, new cases were again on the rise with over 1,200 - the most there since May 21.
Nationally, there were over 25,000 new cases reported on Saturday, the highest tally for a Saturday since May 2, in part due to a significant increase in testing over the past six weeks.

Naturally, Trump's response will be, "Who knew?"

(17,387 posts)Trump has an endless supply of scapegoats. If it is not African Americans, then its Latinos and, if you get tired of sending thousands of troops to the border to stop some make believe invasion, then Trump will start railing against the "China virus" all the while urging that States reopen and cheering on supporters who protest closures while threatening to unleash dogs and chemical weapons against protesters against racism and police brutality.

Many of these incidents were acts of hate-motivated hostility that did not amount to hate crimes but were no less jarring, the commissions director, Robin Toma, said in a virtual town hall.
He described several reported incidents: A man spewed racial and misogynistic epithets at an Asian American woman walking her dog. A resident of an apartment complex, assuming an Asian tenant had contracted the coronavirus, tried to get that tenant evicted. A bomb threat targeted a major Asian American institution, which Toma didnt identify by name.
Throughout the country, law enforcement has identified hate crimes directed at Asian Americans and believed to be motivated by the pandemic. In New York, teenage girls accosted a 51-year-old Asian woman on a bus, hitting her over the head with an umbrella and making anti-Asian statements, city police said. Three 15-year-old girls were charged with hate crimes.

(9,413 posts)The rush to reopen, the disdain for masks and distancing and increased travel make it a near certainty in my opinion.

Totally ignorant or uncaring that we could bring it there!
And they're old enough to have heard stories of the 1918 pandemic from their grandparents.
My mom misses her granddaughter. She works in a meatpacking plant that's seen dozens of cases. My sister just threw a birthday party for her kids and was pissed we didn't come.

I guess all acceptable reasons to kill your grandma or your immunocompromised aunt Amy.

We'll be seeing death rates spike around the 4th of July. Probably above 2,000/day again.

(51 posts)it helps a great deal if you don't just forget about what you're doing and wander away in the middle of the fight.

(32,047 posts)Our hospital ICU's are ok right now, but the few times I've ventured out it has been pretty disheartening. I understand folks exercising without masks outdoors where there is plenty of space (it is already 90 down here daily, plus humidity), but we should all be wearing masks indoors. The Trump followers down here, of which there are many, are still in comments (places like our County's facebook page), making light of the virus or outright insisting that it is overblown by the media.

When this is all over we're gonna see more R's than D's get sick and die.

(7,408 posts)The early re-openings and memorial day weekend are making cases rise now in these particular states. Many are expecting major cities that had large protests the last couple of weeks to see significant spikes by the end of this month as well.
