BEIJING (AP) A tanker truck exploded on a highway in southeastern China on Saturday, killing 18 people and injuring at least 189 others, authorities said.
The explosion caused extensive damage to nearby buildings. One photo showed firefighters hosing down a row of buildings with blown-out facades well into the night.
The truck carrying liquefied gas exploded around 4:45 p.m. on the Shenyang-Haikou Expressway south of Shanghai in Zhejiang province, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing local authorities.
A second explosion followed when the truck fell onto a factory workshop, Xinhua said.

(65,021 posts)Los Alfaques campsite near Barcelona in 1978. That truck was carrying an overload of propylene.
It was the first time I became familiar with a BLEVE event.
That killed around 220 people with around the same number with burns that didn't die.
That campsite looked like it had been nuked.
While this is awful, there have been worse.
In Spain the truck was overfilled, took a route into a high traffic area to avoid a toll road (the driver was told by bosses to do that), and the relief devices were modified to contain the added pressure of overfilling.
I don't remember the exact number, but more than a handful of people went to jail.
The company got sued in extinction.
