Seven Minneapolis police officers resign after George Floyd protests, citing lack of support from ci
Source: StarTribune
At least seven Minneapolis police officers have resigned from the department since widespread unrest began over the death of George Floyd last month, and more than half a dozen are in the process of leaving, according to department officials.
The departures, an unusually large exodus, come amid a growing crisis for the states largest police force, with a state human rights investigation underway, calls for defunding, and even disbandment.
Morale has sunk to new lows in recent weeks, say department insiders, as officers reported feeling misunderstood and squeezed by all sides: by the state probe; by protesters, who hurled bricks and epithets their way; by city leaders, who surrendered a police station that later burned on national television, and by the media. Numerous officers and protesters were injured the rioting.
An uncertain fate for police is likely driving a rash of resignations for those who examine the political climate and think to themselves: Why should I stay? said Mylan Masson, a retired Minneapolis police officer and use-of-force expert. They dont feel appreciated. Everybody hates the police right now. I mean everybody.

(13,091 posts)Big fucking deal.
You are responsible for this.
You time and time again protected and sided with officers you knew were in the wrong.
You were cowards.
You didn't stand up to the bullies in your departments.
You protected them.
You repeatedly killed unarmed citizens.
You repeatedly abused citizens.
You pranced around like peacocks hiding behind your shiny badges.
Fuck all of you.
You caused all of this.

(296 posts)Now on the wall. The city of Minneapolis will no longer tolerate AND PROTECT police who abuse their power. The bad apples are leaving the barrel on their own. They'll show up and spoil some other barrel down the road. BYE BYE!

(32,017 posts)If law enforcement officers are thinking to themselves, Everybody hates the police right now. I mean everybody, then an incentive has been created for police forces around the globe to police their own members, reform their behavior, and STOP protecting the bad cops in their midst.
This is a good thing. We can thank George Floyd for it. It cost him his life. The least that we can do is be grateful for the changes his death instigated.

(945 posts)...of the classic kind. No way a policeman would resign from a job unless he's forced to do so. The police have pensions and privileges that are unheard of. Besides, I can't see that many people actually resigning in this economy.
The reason they site for leaving is because everybody hates the police. If that were the case, they wouldn't have taken the job in the first place.

I appreciate the difficult job that police work can be and I appreciate the good folks out there trying to do the right thing, but this country has settled into a worship the police and military mentality which is long overdue to end.

I think you are right, they wouldn't do this if their pensions were at risk. They probably were ready to do it any way.

(42,279 posts)Tough-mindedness appears to be an act. If they want adulation, they are in the wrong profession. If they don't know why people "hate the police right now", they are in the wrong profession and have blinders on. If they are incapable of listening to what the protestors say, they are in the wrong profession. If they want to crack down and crack heads---they are in the wrong country.

They represent only a tiny minority of the total force. Their resignations will not affect the department much at all, but it will have that many fewer racists on duty.

(47,390 posts)Well, everybody is who the police were hired to serve and protect. If only other cops appreciate or understand them, then clearly they are doing something wrong and they are right to resign.
That said, this is an awful time to quit one's job. Its not like there will be another one waiting for them around the corner.

(9,969 posts)The head of their union is a hard-line jackass who has refused to work with chiefs and mayors to make any meaningful changes. If officers want to feel appreciated, they need to make some good faith efforts to recognize that protesters are in the right and to start changing how they do their jobs.

Other than the fact that seven have resigned, there is little more than speculation in this article and no reason to attribute any particular motivation for their having done so.
