Virginia Republican who officiated gay wedding loses nomination for Congress

Source: The Guardian

A Virginia Republican congressman who angered social conservatives in his district when he officiated a gay wedding has lost his party’s nomination.

Representative Denver Riggleman lost on Saturday in a party convention which was carried out as a drive-thru because of the coronavirus pandemic. He was defeated by Bob Good, a former official in the athletics department at the evangelical Liberty University.

Riggleman, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, upset many Republicans in his district last summer when he officiated the wedding of two male campaign aides.

Donald Trump endorsed him, as did Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. But Good is now the Republican nominee for Virginia’s fifth district. Four Democrats are vying to challenge him in the fall, with the winner picked later this summer.

Do one, single decent thing in your life and get booted. It is kind of bizarre though. A Freedumb Caucus guy doing a same sex wedding? I guess what's OK for your campaign staff isn't OK for the rest of the country, you hypocritical bastard.

... you could put a turd up for election there and if the turd was the Republican nominee, it would win. It would take a miracle for anyone else to win there.

Congressional District VA-05 is so heavily gerrymandered, the district covers 1/3 of the state of Virginia. A democrat can not fairly compete to win office.

Riggleman's predecessor, Thomas Garrett Jr., was an Alcoholic and abused his power.

The 5th District will choose its candidate for Congress at the Democratic primary on June 23, 2020.

This could be a chance for VA-05 to go Blue.

I've lived overseas for 23 years but my last place of residence in the US was Charlottesville. One would think that this seat could be ripe for a blue pick up.
