Trump Retweets Call for Microsoft Ban From Federal Contracts

Source: Bloomberg

President Donald Trump retweeted a post from his former director of national intelligence that called for barring Microsoft Corp. from federal government contracts over its refusal to sell facial recognition software to U.S. police departments until there are laws governing use of the technology.

“They should now be barred from federal government contracts - there should be consequences for not selling technology to police departments,” Trump’s former Acting DNI Richard Grenell tweeted.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nobody in the government ever uses any Microsoft products, do they?

Word?
Excel?
Power Point?

Nah. Didn't think so.

They know how to do this stuff. I have to run at full speed just to stay in place. I don't know why they put up with me, but they're good -- and patient -- instructors.

Every day, I have to learn something new. It wouldn't be possible without my coworkers.

I'm lucky.

I'm 65 years old and Teams is now our company standard for all meetings and internal communications. I'm not a big fan of yet another freaking tool to learn, but it's been a smooth learning curve. You can do it, too!

Full disclosure: I've got Macs out the wazoo at home, but for years, computers at my $workplace have been one Dell after another, all loaded with the Microsoft Office Suite.

Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, and other distros can run on all the government PC gear currently running Windows.

Issues would be the learning curve for all the federal employees using and working as sys admins, plus finding Linux equivalents to third party applications outside of Office, or paying $$$ to have them recoded to run in Linux.

There are OS options outside of Apple. However, I think that request by Lysol Von Clusterfuck will fall on deaf ears.

logy. And of course, where's Rand Paul in all of this? He's against such technologies (I last thought) being used to spy on Americans, etc. Where is he? Or did he crawl into the bunker w/ bunker boy too, to avoid getting beat up by his neighbor?

Hell, it could be ass-covering by Microsoft in case of litigation as much as an actual concern for civil rights.

He already (illegally) excluded Amazon Web Services and the only other qualifying bid was from Microsoft Azure. Amazon has protested the award to Microsoft and it is probably not going to resolve soon. Excluding Microsoft would leave no qualified bidders remaining.

ordered this. Amazon also is banning face recognition technology to police. A non-starter.
Grenfell needs to be better informed.
