Advantage Biden, with risks; Trump disapproval grows: POLL

Biden holds a lead over Trump among registered voters.
May 30, 2020, 11:00 PM
Joe Biden holds a 10-point lead over President Donald Trump among registered voters in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, but that's sliced in half among those certain to vote, reflecting challenges for Biden in terms of voter commitment and enthusiasm alike.
Trump has his own risks, including sharply negative views of the economy and greater criticism of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. His overall job approval rating is back under water, 45-53% among all Americans, with a seven-point rise in disapproval since late March.
Trump's rating specifically for handling the outbreak is a nearly identical 46-53%, with approval down 5 percentage points and disapproval up 8 in the past two months. The margin worsens in terms of strong sentiment: The number who strongly disapprove of his work on the crisis exceeds those who strongly approve by 15 points, 43 versus 28%.
Neither is popular in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. ........................

(599 posts)By November, we will be under martial law and the election will be cancelled.
It should be obvious by now that when the GOP controled Senate refused to remove Trump from office, they rendered democracy null and void. From that day forward, we have been living under the rule of a fascist dictator.
When the GOP Senators failed to uphold their oath of office, they failed to uphold the US constitution. Our dictator is above the law. There is no stopping this puppet regime that was installed by Putin and the Russian mob. Game over.

Yes, he's ignored other laws. This one he cannot ignore; it applies to all 50 states. His term expires 1/20/21 unless he is re-elected. PERIOD.

Simple. Democracy dies not with a whimper, but with laughter.
Stop ignoring it. It is a very real threat and one we need to get in front of and cut off.
If the election can't be certified (look up who does that btw), it will fall to a simple majority vote of one house member selected by each state legislature voting to simple majority rules. Now look up who controls each state legislature. This is also in the constitution.
Since this involves an election and not simple succession, the scotus could easily refuse to swear in the speaker, if there is one, and force e house election.
And that all has the fig leaf of being constitutional.

(12,536 posts)As much as trump ignores it, his win in 16 was only by about 80k votes. I just dont see that happening this time.
The VP pick is going to make this election.

(32,767 posts)The speaker of the house then becomes the interim president.
The people of this country as is shown with current events will not stand for what you are suggesting.
The states now held by39 democratic governors and the house have the say over elections even in times of martial law.
getagrip_already
(14,750 posts)There is also an option for the house of reps to elect the potus directly. Each state selects one rep to send. Simple majority vote.
States legislatures are overwhelmingly controlled by the gop. There is no doubt this will result in a gop potus. The scotus would likely prefer this route, and would see any appointed potus as temporary.
In any case, without control of the senate they may not approve a single cabinet member or appointee.
It can happen quite constitutionally.

(12,536 posts)Which means we've had an election. 12th Amendment
getagrip_already
(14,750 posts)Their ultimate strategy is to get the election to be conducted in the house. Not by the people. See the 12th amendment. The president of the senate, is the presiding officer during the count. If he refuses to allow votes from contested states, we have a constitutional crisis.
If no candidate gets 270 EC votes (which can happen if key states biden would win get mucked up in legal challenges and failures to certify), it goes to the gop. Well, that is the result. It goes to the house for an immediate vote, but only one member per state gets to vote - being chosen by their home state legilature. Gop win.
Ok, what happens if pelosi keeps the house from taking that vote? Then pence (the only vp we have) becomes president for the 4 year term and worse case the new vp is chosen by the still gop senate. gop win.
Here is article 12:
[Article XII] (Amendment 12 - Election of President)
The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and of all persons voted for as Vice-President, and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate; The President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted; The person having the greatest number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President. But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote; a quorum for this purpose shall consist of a member or members from two-thirds of the states, and a majority of all the states shall be necessary to a choice. And if the House of Representatives shall not choose a President whenever the right of choice shall devolve upon them, before the fourth day of March next following, then the Vice-President shall act as President, as in the case of the death or other constitutional disability of the President.14 The person having the greatest number of votes as Vice-President, shall be the Vice-President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed, and if no person have a majority, then from the two highest numbers on the list, the Senate shall choose the Vice-President; a quorum for the purpose shall consist of two-thirds of the whole number of Senators, and a majority of the whole number shall be necessary to a choice. But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States. ratified #12 affects 8

(3,495 posts)Nixon painted those opposed to the Vietnam War as trouble makers, hippies (pot heads) and other derelicts of society thus avoiding answering the source of the agitation. Its early still but if this goes on or gets more out of hand I see the same outcome; the original problem of of police unaccountability towards certain members of society being completely bypassed. Looting and attacking police stations is not going to garner any sympathy for any cause.
And for the record I find it highly ironic that those who decry big government being out of control (the paramilitary wanna bees ) are the first groups to push for military style police reaction to any protesters who they disagree with. I wont be surprised if tRumps numbers start trending up in a few weeks.

(12,536 posts)And they also may not vote for Biden. If you asked them, they'd be a "not sure". Because at this point some may skip the line for president altogether.
But to me a former trump voter who doesnt vote is still a lost trump vote. And no one who voted for clinton in 16 is going to vote for trump in 20.

This election year we've had over 3 years of hell, we can now pick at him
and he doesn't know how to handle it.
Unfortunately we still have 5 months until election and as I always say,

(388 posts)This is the time for Biden to shine as a leader. He needs to make a national announcement with a strong message to end police brutality and end the riots. The right wingers say that Biden is weak and some independant voters probably believe that. A strong and forceful message from Biden will show them.

(2,022 posts)The only poll that matters is the electoral college. Every time I heard one of these polls I feel the need to say this:
2016 Presidential Election
Trump: 306
Clinton: 232
Every time we think Biden is way out front, we need to take a long look at those numbers and think about how Hillary was ahead in the polls, and won the popular vote. As you say, there are only a handful of states will decide the outcome.
