As Mayor Frey calls for officer's arrest, violence intensifies in Minneapolis
Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune
Minneapolis shuddered with violence overnight Wednesday, as rioters ignited fires and looted stores all over the city, standing in stark contrast to the mostly peaceful protests outside of a South Side police station over the police killing of George Floyd.
Early Thursday, city and law enforcement officials were still tallying the full toll of the night, which saw at least five people struck by gunfire, one fatally when the owner of a pawn shop opened fire on a man he believed was burglarizing his business. Dozens of businesses were either looted or torched, or both, mostly in the area of Minnehaha Avenue and E. Lake Street, but also along business corridors on the city's North and South sides.
The National Guard was ordered to the 3rd Precinct police station to relieve Minneapolis police officers, as demonstrators encircled the precinct, chanting loudly and carrying banners demanding justice for Floyd. St. Paul police and the State Patrol were also on hand.
It's not clear how many arrests police made throughout the night. In the fatal shooting, a 59-year-old man was booked into the Hennepin County Jail on suspicion of murder, according to online jail records.

(2,018 posts)Frey is not on the side of good here. Yes, he is calling for arrest. He has no power in charging the cops, however, so those words are only symbolic of doing something.
He DOES have the power to control police policy - but has not used it despite multiple incidents of police violence. He DOES have the power to tell the cops to not meet protest with more violence. He didnt do that. He DOES have the power to go down to Lake Street and talk to protestors. He didnt do that either.

It was the second night of violent protest since the death of George Floyd.

Protesters began gathering in the early afternoon near the citys 3rd Precinct station, in the southern part of the city where 46-year-old George Floyd died on Memorial Day after an officer knelt on his neck until he became unresponsive.
News helicopter footage showed protesters milling in streets near the citys 3rd Precinct station, with some running in and out of nearby stores. A Target, a Cub Foods, a Dollar Tree and an auto parts store all showed signs of damage and looting. As darkness fell, fire erupted in the auto parts store, and city fire crews rushed to control it. Protesters set other fires in the street.
Officers could be seen surrounding the nearby precinct, not attempting to intervene in the looting.
Multiple fires burned early Thursday at buildings and smoke hung over the city. Fire crews worked to put out flames. Blocks of buildings with broken-out windows and other damage from looting were seen, and KSTP-TV reported that some people were seen going through buildings...........................

(24,926 posts)because of the helicopters and sirens, but mostly because of the rage I felt at the cops who killed a man for being black.
Frey is toast. I hope the president of the Police Union, that troll Kroll rots in hell.

(37,748 posts)Who is arguing rioting is an attempt to bring justice?
Seems the only ones bringing that up that non sequitur are doing it for the sole purpose of sanctimoniously arguing against a point *no one* is making.
The question to ask is: what is the inherent and fundamental cause of rioting throughout post-industrial history. Address that, ask that, ponder that, and you'll find you've finally taken a step into a real world, devoid of the absolutist bumper stickers and rose colored glasses we use to warm ourselves with.
Try it. Just once. It's scary, sure... but the long term benefits to rational thought will far outweigh the tempting emptiness of the irrelevant non sequitur.

(6,147 posts)I want the motherfucker arrested for first degree murder, and I want all of his blue buddies arrested as accessories.
There has been time enough. They should not be walking free for even one day longer.
If you want the rioting to stop, arrest the murderer. Put him in jail and let him get lynched for his trial. Prison justice. And let him suffer all the way down.
