Trump asks whether he should be taking insulin despite not being diabetic
Source: USA Today
WASHINGTON President Donald Trump pondered on Tuesday whether he should be taking insulin, a hormone typically prescribed to diabetics, during an announcement for a plan which would aim to drastically reduce the price of insulin for people on Medicare.
"I don't use insulin," Trump said. "Should I be? Huh? I never thought about it. But I know a lot of people are very badly affected, right? Unbelievable."
In people with Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas cant make insulin. Those with the condition require several doses of insulin a day.

Asked later by a reporter why he would take insulin, Trump asked surgeon general Jerome Adams to answer, in which he explained to the president that, "Your body, Mr. President, actually makes insulin endogenously."

I think he should take insulin, lots of it, just to make sure he doesn't become diabetic...

(11,518 posts)But yeah, it would be a good thing if he were to take as much insulin as he can get his hands on.

(111,255 posts)Oh, I went through a period of that in the 60s, but I was early 20s and when the 60s ended, so did any experimentation.
Insulin never appealed to me, putting myself into a coma and destroying much of my brain seemed a distinctly unattractive proposition, and the Sunny von Bulow case hadn't even happened yet.
Dr. Adams should know better than use big words to Big Dummy, who will undoubtedly interpret "endogenously" to mean it doesn't make enough and he needs more.
I'm actually a little surprised Big Dummy isn't looking at insulin, his diet is one big cheat and his body type screams "metabolic syndrome." Clearly someone has mentioned it as a threat in the past, it's on his pea brain.

(6,486 posts)Someone mentions a drug and he thinks "I should try that." His thought process: all the scientific evidence says a drug doesn't work for Covid but some guy at the next urinal said it was good, so he took it.
I suspect that he thought "endogenous" meant "in a dog genius." It doesn't matter that that doesn't make any sense. He's accustomed to things not making sense and it's just part of life for him. Anything scientific is Greek to him. The President's Daily Briefing is just a bunch of incomprehensible words. Scientists and medical professionals use words he doesn't understand so he considers them useless.

Aussie105
(5,388 posts)Type 2 is common in people of his skin color - white, not orange - age, weight and poor dietary habits.
Throw in a lack of regular exercise, and type 2 is guaranteed.
It's just most type 2 diabetics don't know it, around half, and shy away from finding out with a glucose tolerance test because it would interfere with their self declared perception of perfection and invulnerability.
One of the telltale signs is peripheral nerve damage, eg difficulty in drinking from a container with one hand, difficulty in walking.
Sound familiar?
Full disclosure: I'm type 2.
But YES Don, try some insulin! What have you got to lose?

(9,981 posts)Hoarding leads to higher demand which leads to shortages which leads to higher prices the drug manufacturer can charge which leads to bigger profits which leads to higher stock prices. I think we underestimate how Trumps musings affect the stock market and how savvy investors can make a lot of money. I think I remember some news articles about mysterious investors who made millions a year or so ago when Trump announced he was shutting down the border with Mexico completely. The market went down for a few days and within a week Trump announced that he wasnt doing anything about the border. Short sellers made a bundlealmost as if that was the plan! Theres a reason we dont know for why he has pushed hydroxychloroquine so hard. He may not own stock in its manufacturer but I suspect some Fox hosts do. Trumps way of paying them for broadcasting his lies.

(6,448 posts)He's projecting again. His girth has made his pancreas incapable of producing enough insulin for his massive weight. This will explain whenever someone outside his inner circle may see him test his blood sugar or "shoot up" into his fat cells.
This means his 2-year regimen of oral meds has concluded. The speech issues and imbalance could have come from hypoglycemia.
It also explains why his hamberders come with a DIET Coke chaser.

(11,986 posts)Is there any reason why someone who does not have diabetes would take insulin? Is there any sort of medical reason for that?
Donald Trump:
I could ask that question to anybody like to discuss that. Do you want to discuss it, please? Go ahead. Do you know the answer? Either one of you or both. Come on and lets get these highly paid executives up here to give the answer. Seema, please. Jerome. We picked a good one. We got it right.
Jerome Adams:
Your body, Mr. President actually makes insulin endogenously and people such as you and I, we make our own insulin. So yes, we do utilize insulin, but we make it ourselves. Other people who have diabetes oftentimes need exogenous insulin made by many of these great manufacturers here so that they can be healthy and live long and successful lives.
Donald Trump:
And Tracy, do you agree with that? And the question I found to be a very interesting one, but is that an unusual question or an unusual circumstance?
Tracy:
Im not sure that its an unusual question, there are many people who are not clear on {inaudible}.
Donald Trump:
Right. Okay, good. I thought it was a very good question, actually.
He really had no idea that insulin is only for diabetics. He asked if the doctors behind him knew the answer. Not satisfied with one answer, he needed to confirm the other doctor agreed. And then commented on what a good question it was. He really hadn't a clue.
