Trump Visits Baltimore, Dismissing Mayor's Concerns About Virus

Source: Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump paid a controversial visit to Baltimore for a Memorial Day celebration on Monday, dismissing the mayor’s warnings to stay away from the city as it grapples with the pandemic.

The White House said that the ceremony at Fort McHenry -- which defended Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812, inspiring the poem later adapted as “The Star Spangled Banner” -- was intended to honor American service members who lost their lives in battle.

But Baltimore Mayor Jack Young said a non-essential trip by the president sends “the wrong message” to residents who are sheltering in their homes. The trip diverts police officers who could be enforcing social-distancing measures on a holiday weekend to provide security for the White House, he said.

Trump didn’t directly address Young’s comments in remarks at Fort McHenry, but expressed optimism about the fight against the pandemic, which has already claimed nearly 100,000 lives in the U.S.

Isn't that where they manned the airports in the war of 1812?

1. LOLOL!

VROOOOM!

Fort McHenry was a key fort to defending the river access to Baltimore. ... The Fort itself was important because it guarded Baltimore. The British believed Baltimore to be a base for American Privateers that would sink British ships.

On June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on England, in part to "preserve Free Trade & Sailor's Rights." In August 1814, British forces marched on Washington, defeated U.S. forces, and burned the Capitol. Then, on September 13-14, the British attacked Fort McHenry.

'As he approached Fort McHenry, his eyes met those of dead patriots fallen for the love of a nation. He made his way to the flagpole. ... The British had indeed uprooted the flagpole, but as it fell towards the earth, it was caught and held up by American soldiers who realized what that flag really stood for.'

3. Good question

Of course the Orange Fuckopotomus might have done this deliberately as he knew it would divert police away from their regular duties.

4. If there isn't a federal law mandating the use of police officers during a presidential visit,

I, as mayor, would have not allowed their "use" during this made for tv moment.

7. Baltimore has a Democratic mayor and a significant Black population. Trump needs to appear

to trample on both along with displaying ownership of US military personnel, contempt for those who are fighting the Virus, and those who wisely advise us how to do so.

I hope he has the Gerry Ford moment he so richly deserves on while camera.
