Jeff Sessions snaps back after Trump tells Alabama not to trust him

Former attorney general is running for old Senate seat
President ‘damned fortunate’ he recused from Russia inquiry

Last modified on Sat 23 May 2020 09.04 EDT

After Donald Trump told supporters in Alabama “do not trust” Jeff Sessions and backed his opponent for the Republican Senate nomination, the man Trump trusted to be his first attorney general did something rare: he snapped back.

The president was “damned fortunate”, Sessions said on Friday night, that he recused himself from the Russia investigation.

Sessions, 73, said his March 2017 decision, forced because he did not disclose to Congress contacts with the Russian ambassador during the 2016 election, “protected the rule of law and resulted in your exoneration”.

In fact special counsel Robert Mueller, appointed by then deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein on 17 May 2017, said in his report that though he had not found evidence of criminal conspiracy between Moscow and the president, he was not exonerating Trump.

Sessions is an immigration hardliner and mentor to the hard-right Trump adviser Stephen Miller. He was the first senator to endorse Trump in 2016.................

The people of Alabama feel good because it makes plain who is the superior candidate: Senator Doug Jones.

I have no pity for any of these idiots who twist themselves into knots to demonstrate undying fealty to Trump. Then, when the inevitable happens and he turns on 'em, they're inexplicably stunned.

The only thing that surprised me - truly surprised me - was that Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III was the one to show even a modicum of ethics. He was finally AG and he wanted that job; I mean he reeeeeeally wanted that job. He was finally in a position to go after anything/anybody and everything/everybody his bigoted black heart desired. And he could do so with all the power that comes with being the chief law enforcement officer of the federal government. Then... he blew it.

And worse, he seems surprised by it.

Are these people really that stupid? They see all these people, one after another after another, get thrown under the bus when they're no longer of use. Do they really think it'll never happen to them? Trump is a petulant, stupid, vindictive man-child... OF COURSE it's going to happen to them.

And you know what? Couldn't happen to a more deserving crowd. S'what you get. Stupid fuckers.

Either GOP candidate when nominated will be carrying a lot of baggage. I'm rooting for Sessions to get the nomination. The vindictive vitriol from Trump would make for great ads. I can almost envision Jones proclaiming: "I don't much agree with Donald Trump, but we both agree that Jeff Sessions is not a good choice for Alabama". So let the games continue!

Of all the Republicans running for that seat, Jeff Sessions is the least objectionable.

Fingers crossed for Jones . . .
