As 2.4 million more applied for unemployment insurance, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he will not extend the added $600 weekly benefit.
Another 2.4 million Americans filed jobless claims last week, bringing the total number of Americans out of work to 38.6 million, the Department of Labor reported on Thursday.
The news comes as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed to end the additional $600 weekly payment unemployed Americans are receiving under provisions of the $2 trillion CARES Act Congress passed in March.
According to Politico, McConnell told House Republicans on Wednesday that the additional payments "will not be in the next bill."
The $600 addition to unemployment payments is set to expire at the end of July.

Lets think of what the #Moscow Mitch and his libertarian cohorts are thinking, they deride the poor, but they want to drive more citizens into the poor ranks, during a pandemic with around 40 million out of work, and then in some future BS rant, they deride people to find a job and that said people are looking for some free ride, and then to top it all off this jerk, makes around $18,725.00 dollars a month or $225,000.00 a year being the libertarian leader collecting a taxpayer paycheck, which he thinks is great for him, but when the citizens paying that wage need some assistance............his attitude is don't let the door hit you in the ass when you leave and continue eating cake.........because I am getting my free lunch ticket being the leader of the senate, and all of the other non-chair leaders in that chamber make $174,000.00 a year......off your taxes..............
He has the House bill (HEROES ACT) sitting on his desk, so now he is playing with people lives literally and he is taking a One Week recess....................

(17,778 posts)Rethugs have never shied away from spending huge if it benefits them politically. And with +20% unemployment through the summer and into the fall makes the payments politically beneficial to all who sign on. No one wants to be perceived as a modern Herbert Hoover. So what gives? Are they stupid or just wicked? - Rhetorical question...they are both.

and whatever strategies people do come up with for surviving will not be 'on the books', so federal, state and municipal tax bases will not be replenished by these efforts. And of course resentment of any taxes at all will rise, seeing as how the services and benefits of tax revenue will be zeroed out.
My guess is his position is based on the expectation that Democrats will win the White House and regain majority of the Senate. Shit up the place to make sure the opposing party's job is 10 times harder.

The last twelve hundred dollar check was a trial run. This is baked into the Campaign buy the Rethugs in order to save their little Lord Poopy Pants from Prison.

(17,778 posts)Obvious political pandering. All the Dems have to say is back in the spring and summer when people were literally going hungry, Dems wanted to pass stimulus legislation while Rethugs did absolutely nothing.....until election time became focused in people's brains. Then again, you may be right. Neither Rethugs nor their peps are terribly deep thinkers.

(239 posts)Biden should highlight how the GOP doesn't give a crap about the average American. He should pound this point relentlessly. If done right, along with attacking Trump's totally inept handling of the Corona virus, Biden could win by a landslide! (That is, if the DNC is smart enough to follow this advice. They have been known to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.)

And what's wrong with our water and media? One reporter for the Courier Journal just won a Nobel Prize.
