Exclusive: A quarter of Americans are hesitant about a coronavirus vaccine - Reuters/Ipsos poll

Source: Reuters

U.S. MAY 21, 2020 / 7:03 AM / UPDATED 2 HOURS AGO

Reuters) - A quarter of Americans have little or no interest in taking a coronavirus vaccine, a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Thursday found, with some voicing concern that the record pace at which vaccine candidates are being developed could compromise safety.

While health experts say a vaccine to prevent infection is needed to return life to normal, the survey points to a potential trust issue for the Trump administration already under fire for its often contradictory safety guidance during the pandemic.

Some 36% of respondents said they would be less willing to take a vaccine if U.S. President Donald Trump said it was safe, compared with only 14% who would be more interested.

Most respondents in the survey of 4,428 U.S. adults taken between May 13 and May 19 said they would be heavily influenced by guidance from the Food and Drug Administration or results of large-scale scientific studies showing that the vaccine was safe.

Reporting by Joseph Ax in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and Julie Steenhuysen in Chicago; additional reporting by Grant Smith in Jersey City, N.J., editing by Ross Colvin and Bill Berkrot

-snip-

The poll responses varied among certain demographic groups. Only half of black Americans, who represent a disproportionate percentage of coronavirus deaths, said they were somewhat or very interested in a vaccine, perhaps reflecting memories of an infamous U.S. government study that left black men deliberately untreated for syphilis.

College-educated white women - a politically important demographic that has moved sharply away from the Republican Party during the Trump era - were particularly concerned about how quickly the vaccine is being developed. More than 40% said Trump’s reassurance would make them less willing to take it.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States and had a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

If it is a simply anti-vax standpoint that's nuts. But we should all be careful and question a rushed vaccine especially if it is something Trump is pushing from a political standpoint.

2 entirely separate classes of people are concerned about this. One of them is just stupid, the other knows that anything drumpf promotes is a lie and a scam for his personal profit and our peril. If the vaccine comes from Oxford, I'd trust it. If it's an American co., I'd be very concerned that drumpf is profiteering again and could be a total killer. If it is American, as much as I want a vaccine, I will wait for at least 90 days to make sure everyone isn't turning into zombies first.

If it is produced by something named "Operation Warp(ed, I gotta get reelected) Speed," then I'm not sure I am interested at all.

To me there will be two stages to my acceptance.

1) It has been given in large numbers and there are very few instances of ill effects over a significant period of time. I would then consider taking it.

2) #1 above plus widely demonstrated effectiveness in preventing infection with this Corona Virus as well as wholehearted, unequivocal acceptance by WHO and CDC (w/ Democratic administration), then I'd be lining up

Trumps vaccine czar has 10 million in Moderna stock which leads to doubts that their vaccine is best. This what happens when government is run like a business instead of serving the greater good of all Americans.

we will probably end up with multiple vaccines for this virus. Groups all over the planet are working on various vaccines, some quite novel. Most likely we'll have our pick depending on what FDA approves.

Just like the superior Testing kits Germany developed but Trump refused to use so he could sell his inferior product...

I doubt highly we'll have any choice at all - only the Trump approved Corporate pick will be made available to ordinary American Citizens.

I'll only take a vaccine approved by the WHO or similarly responsible and reputable international body.

He pointed me to this hack: Ivette Lozano who seems to be the darling of the Hydroxychloroquine cult and Fox news... She learned of the drug from Trump.... FFS.

Basically, Pharma is silencing hydroxychloroquine to push more expensive drugs....

Real interesting thing about her... she has been practicing for 20 years, 100% cure rate for patients using the drug....but if you look at her reviews, they are all within in the last couple months....very few of them... the oldest ones...which are only a few are mostly very negative.... Search her name and you get all of these generic sites with generic information....and tons of pointers to her youtube videos at MAGA crowds....

My friend said he will take the drug rather than any vaccine.

I pointed him to the various trials, the footage of fauci, brix recommending against the drug... He said he doesn't believe it.

Amazing.... This is a long time friend...my best man, I was his best man... and I am on the verge of cutting ties, but still may try to atleast put a question in his head so he doesn't hurt himself or anyone else by pushing this misinformation.

"hesitant" about a vaccine. What the fuck does that mean? In the absence of any information such as the ingredients, manufacturing process, testing results, possible side-effects, etc what is there to be hesitant about? The only thing they should be hesitant about is coming to any conclusions about, or making any statements about, a coronavirus vaccine that doesn't exist.
