Trump says he's considering holding G-7 in person again amid pandemic

Source: The Hill

President Trump on Wednesday said he is considering holding this year's Group of Seven (G-7) summit in-person at Camp David again after it was scrapped in favor of a video conference due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Now that our Country is 'Transitioning back to Greatness', I am considering rescheduling the G-7, on the same or similar date, in Washington, D.C., at the legendary Camp David," Trump tweeted. "The other members are also beginning their COMEBACK. It would be a great sign to all - normalization!"

Public health officials have warned that the coronavirus is unlikely to go away and large gatherings, like the G-7, may not be safe until a vaccine is widely available. It's unclear whether officials in other G-7 member countries would agree to travel to the United States for an in-person meeting given the pandemic has not subsided.

The G-7 was scheduled to be take place from June 10-12 at the Camp David retreat in Maryland. The event, which typically attracts hundreds of international officials, staff and journalists, was called off in March as the coronavirus spread around the world.

What's the point even of making people travel now? Less fuel/arrangements/hassle. Everything should be done by video conference from now on unless absolutely necessary. It saves fuel/flights/hassle. What is lost by not being there in person besides the schmoozing?

Actually I call this a win for the rest of the G7, they'll just have their teleconference meeting, with or without Putin's Pocket Puppet.

After they all were seen on tape mocking him last time, he's just itching for an excuse to cast them as "weak and afraid" (which the rest of the sentient world will recognize as "intelligent and responsible&quot .

I suppose they could dust off the plans from when Obama hosted the G-7. (BTW, what's a "similar date"?) I'd be surprised if Merkel or Macron decided to show up, given the speed at with the US infection rate is rising.

Trudeau is a no-show. He’s not about to go for round two with COVID-19. After his wife got in London (she is better now) he’ll be skipping Trump’s Coronavirus Party 🎉.

Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if he was just shooting his mouth off to look like he’s so tough for the MAGA-ROT.

French President Emmanuel Macron is open to travelling to the United States for an in-person meeting of G7 leaders if the coronavirus pandemic allows it, his office said on Wednesday, after the US president said he was considering hosting the event after all.

"He's open, he's even willing to go there, but obviously with this caveat: only if the sanitary conditions allow," an Élysée Palace official said, after Macron and US President Donald Trump talked on the phone.
...
Pressed by AP on whether she would consider an actual trip to the US, Merkel said: “I chose my words with care.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it an interesting idea, but said leaders need a lot more details. He said it was important that G7 leaders meet in June so they can discuss the pandemic and restoring economic activity.

I liken the responses to "very careful" because if this assclown gets re-elected, they will have to play nice with him for four more years.
