Steamrolled Republicans fuming after Trump leaves them in the dark over IG firing: We deserve an explanation
Published 1 min ago on May 19, 2020
According to a report from Politico, Republican lawmakers have been left in an awkward position by Donald Trump after he fired State Department Inspector General Steve Linick and provided them no talking points or explanation to defend his decision.
The report notes, Senate Republicans find themselves in a familiar place: steamrolled by President Donald Trumps purge of government watchdogs and offering little indication of how they plan to stop him, before adding, that the president has failed to offer a clear explanation for his decision, as required by law.
The president has defied Senate Republicans without hesitation, continuing to fire and reassign inspectors general whom he feels are insufficiently loyal to him without engendering blowback from his party. Its a dynamic that reflects both Trumps hold on the GOP and the limits of Congress broader ability to rein in a president, Politico reports.

In the meantime, GOP lawmakers say they are waiting for a response from the president to letter from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) asking for an explanation, but that hasnt stopped them from expressing their frustration when speaking with reporters..........................

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., the Senate Foreign Relations Committees ranking member, have demanded that the Trump administration hand over all records related to Linicks firing by Friday.
In a statement over the weekend, Engel and Menendez said that they understood Pompeo recommended Linick be fired because the Inspector General had opened an investigation into wrongdoing by Secretary Pompeo himself.
...........NBC and other outlets reported Monday that Linick was also nearly done with another probe, this one dealing with Pompeos approval of a multibillion-dollar arms sale to Saudi Arabia.
The Trump administration had issued an emergency declaration to push the deal through without requiring congressional approval. Resolutions to block the deal passed the Democrat-led House, but were vetoed by Trump. A Senate attempt to override the veto failed.

Engel in a statement Monday told CNBC: I have learned that there may be another reason for Mr. Linicks firing. His office was investigating at my request Trumps phony declaration of an emergency so he could send weapons to Saudi Arabia.
We dont have the full picture yet, but its troubling that Secretary Pompeo wanted Mr. Linick pushed out before this work could be completed, Engel said................

They created this Trumpenstein Monster... Now, they (along with us, unfortunately) have to live with the consequences.
