Trouble for Gavin Newsom's $1 billion mask deal: Feds reject safety certification

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s assertion that shipments of medical masks the state bought from a Chinese manufacturer had simply been delayed because of federal safety certification issues was thrown into doubt Wednesday when regulators said they had actually rejected the masks.

Many of the N95 particulate-filtering respirators California planned to buy from supplier BYD in a $1 billion deal are now in limbo while the company tries to secure safety certification.

Katie Shahan, a spokeswoman for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, said the agency had denied safety certification of the masks “based on a number of factors.” She said federal rules prohibit the agency from disclosing the specific reasons.

“NIOSH tested the received hardware; however, the review of the documentation provided to NIOSH for the design, manufacturing and quality inspection of the device was concerning,” Shahan wrote in an email.

and thought they would give it a try. There is going to be a big change in the medical supply chain in this country - would be a good time for US-based manufacturers to gear up.

17. BYD is huge, well respected company in China. My company worked with BYD's

energy storage division on a couple of projects. We worked with their engineers in Shenzhen and Los ngeles. We had no issues with them. BYD has North American Headquarters in Los Angeles.

So, in this case, I think trump's admin just said the masks didn't meet safety standard so that Jared/the crime family could confiscate the masks.

12. There was a story earlier today about China sourced masks which had the wrong securing method,

ear loops rather than behind the head elastic straps, which don't permit correct sealing around the face and nose. Could these be the same type?

Frankly, that was an issue before this pandemic; not hard to believe that it continues.

What would be truly shocking, though, is if someone in the Trump admin actually *did* something about it!

So, hopefully they just saved us a ton of money. Maybe they did it to punish Newsom, but if the masks were truly defective, I'm glad we found out.
