Senate Republicans asked Attorney General Bill Barr and acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell for a list of Obama administration officials at the center of a right-wing conspiracy theory, days after Grenell declassified their identities.


Picking up on a decision by Grenell this week to declassify the names of Obama officials who asked to learn the identity of an American citizen flagged in intelligence reports, Sens. Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) followed on, asking that Grenell and Barr give them the names.

The American citizen who was "unmasked" by the requests was former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. The Trump administration dropped the charges to which Flynn had pleaded guilty last week, in a stunning example of politicization at the Justice Department.

Intelligence reports that capture the activities of U.S. citizens typically redact the identity of those Americans. Top-level officials can ask for those identities to be revealed, in a confidential process -- "unmasking" them.

(Defense Intelligence Agency) Flynn should have damn well known we would be listening in on the cell phone of the head Russian spy in the country.

As someone who held a top security clearance, he also should have known that he had a responsibility to report contact with foreign nationals of certain countries.

Its not just that he lied to the FBI about his contact with Kisliak, he should have been reporting those conversations to the FBI on his own.

Well, at least that's the regulations that apply to us peasants ....

Former Vice President Joe Biden, former FBI Director James Comey, former CIA Director John Brennan, and 13 other Obama administration officials all sought the "unmasking" of a person who was on the other end of wiretapped phone calls of then-Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak between December 2016 and early January 2017, key Republicans senators announced on Wednesday.

The announcement is part of a larger plan among GOP legislators to lean into Donald Trump's "Obamagate" theory, which maintains that the former president and his top intelligence chiefs sought to entrap incoming Trump officials in legal controversy to kneecap Mr Trump's presidency from the start.

The person on the other end of the phone calls with Mr Kislyak turned out to be incoming national security adviser Michael Flynn, who later pleaded guilty — and subsequently revoked that plea — to lying to FBI agents about his correspondence with the Russian diplomat.

“Today we received a list of individuals who requested the unmasking of Lt. General Michael Flynn and others who received access to that information," Homeland Security Chairman Ron Johnson and Finance Chairman Chuck Grassley said in a joint statement on Wednesday.
