Florida marks its deadliest week of coronavirus pandemic

Source: Tampa Bay Times

The past week marked the deadliest in Florida since the novel coronavirus took hold in the Sunshine State more than two months ago.

The state’s death toll jumped by 401 people, an average of 57 new recorded fatalities each day since May 1.

But even excluding Tuesday, the week’s average was 48 deaths per day, slightly above the previous record, set in mid-April.

For most Floridians, the week was also the first with places reopening after the coronavirus led to a statewide stay-at-home order more than a month ago.

6. It isn't. The state is stripping out the deaths of everyone that has a 2nd house.

There are lots of old rich people in So. Fl. that have multiple homes and if they die in FL. the numbers get stripped out because they also have a residence somewhere else. The numbers don't get added to the other residence state so they are fudging the numbers. It's mainly the lower demographics areas where the deaths are the worst, so thinking the majority are being counted - eventually. There was also a time when the state wasn't processing the tests quickly so they were slowing down the reporting of the numbers - on purpose and were always a week behind. It may still be happening, but not sure as I haven't seen any recent reporting on this.

9. I think they're holding back numbers.

In my county, on the same day that they recorded no new cases, they recorded two deaths. Those deaths came on the heels that a public records request showed the number of deaths for the state wasn't properly blocked out.

They're treating the no. of deaths like a Friday news dump.

4. The reopening was also only partial and only in certain parts of the state.

Some areas have some parks and beaches open but the beaches in Broward County are still closed, AFAIK. Restaurants opened at 25% capacity this week, but no one I know went and ate in. Driving by the larger restaurants, their parking lots are still empty or almost empty. This week they are opening up hair and nail salons, so it will continue to get worse.

My haircutter works at a spa with 2 rooms designated for hair. They have thoroughly cleaned the place with alcohol and are opening up to 2 appts. at a time, one in each room, staggering appt times, wearing masks and gloves, clean thoroughly between each client, allowing an hour for cleaning in between. I think it's about as safe as it's going to get since I know them and know for sure they are doing this. I'd made an appt. for 5/14 back when I thought they'd be open on 5/1, so I gave it 2 weeks to see if the numbers started going up. Well, mini-me didn't open on 5/1, it's now 5/10. I'm torn between getting in quick before things get worse, or waiting to see if they get worse and if so cancel.

10. A blow drier is a virus gun...shooting humid virus particles all over the place...

...if I squirt a little air freshener in the living room, 30 minutes later I can smell it. If someone with the virus sits in a hair salon, the stuff is blown all over the place and is floating around and stirred up constantly by driers and sinks splashing water.

I think you need a hospital style set up to avoid the virus in salons.

That's the way it was described on one of the local health expert shows.

19. Rhode Island is not "opening everything"

Not really sure where you got that. Capacity limits are in place and people must wear masks. The malls are still closed. Churches will not be allowed to hold mass for more than five people. There is still no eat in dining at restaurants. No gyms, hair, nail or tattoo parlors are open. Companies are still being encouraged to continue working from home, and I can tell you as part of one of them, that will continue for me.

This "opening" today is very limited for certain retail stores and some public parks areas. Certainly not "worse" than Florida which has been embarrassingly inconsistent and brazen from the start.

their minds. Restaurants packed, farmers markets packed and no masks. I see more masks at Lowe’s and HD.

...but she is a young mother, married to a trumpster, and part of the far-right clan. We don't discuss politics much...

She took her family to Clearwater beach in March, hubby took a trip to Hawaii in March too, and I had short conversation with her about the dangers. She spouted a bunch of Faux News crap about how hard it was to get it and there was a cure available; and I quit arguing with her.

Fast forward to last week...and a month of crickets, crickets, crickets....I was a bit curious if something was up so I sent an email.

She apologized. Hubby and Mother both got coronavirus and recovered after a couple weeks, and then one of the two children ended up in the ER with 104 fever! They all survived, have a $3000 medical bill, and now believe the virus is real! Kids can get it too!

A harsh lesson.

‘Found Unresponsive at Home’: Grim Records Recount Lonely Deaths
Records kept by medical examiners in Florida offer a window into how the coronavirus has killed more than 1,600 people there. Many died at home.

After so many people die after being sent away from clinics and ERs, they'll probably ask the legislature for tort protection.

Couple weeks ago. No idea how long he'll be there. In the Tampa area. He went to the grocery this morning, and said maybe half the people were wearing masks.

Before that, he was in Nebraska. He took his temperature out on the porch before coming in the house.

Trying to hold in the panic attacks.....
