Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst is running for reelection in what will likely be one of the nations most closely watched Senate contests this year. But her campaign has shielded a key bit of financial information from voters and the public: who shes paying to run her re-election effort, and how much.
Through a subtle accounting maneuver, Ernsts campaign has for months avoided reporting the names of the campaign staffers on her payroll, how many of those staffers there are, and the extent of payments theyve received. Instead, the campaign appears to have grouped all of its employees together in large lump-sum payments to a staffing and human resources company it uses to administer its payroll.
Its an arrangement that campaign finance experts say may have violated the spirit, and possibly the letter, of Federal Election Commission rules on the disclosure of payments to campaign staffers. The Ernst campaign disagrees, saying it fully complied with disclosure requirements, even as other Senate campaigns that employ the same payroll management firm have disclosed far more about the sums steered to their individual staffers........................

(8,835 posts)Trump & RepubliCONs completely neutered the FEC as he did with countless other commissions.
The FEC is currently frozen. Period.
check on it if you question me........The FEC has been dead in the water for years......
I for one, can't tell you how many times I have stated: "They can't do that!" Actually I started saying that in the Cheney administration, and had to kick it into high gear with Lardass, his ReubliCon Senators, Trump appointees, the BARR-DOJ, and most importantly the United States Supreme Court. The coup in the USSC was the kiss of Death to Democracy and our Country. Citizens United was the foundation, and then Gorsuch and Kavanaugh put the final nails in all of our coffins.....
Within months, we will be named the United Corporations of America, a Corporate Fascist Tyranny.......

(14,576 posts)people who really call the shots. And, if we people somehow make it inconvenient because we're pushing back, then the powers that be will call it 'class warfare' and simply change the laws so we can no longer do what was working for us.
A classic example is the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947. I think it's 1947.
Anyway, what Taft-Hartley did was make it illegal for unions to engage with other unions in general strikes. This was because workers in shipyards during WWII wanted better wages and working conditions and struck numerous times.
So they changed the law.
Another shining example is the Espionage Act of 1917. This act was especially geared to pull the teeth of unions, and in fact was the law under which the American hero Eugene Debs was convicted. Because, like all sensible workers, he was against the war. Silly him - all that money to be made by the Military Industrial Complex, then in its infancy and under the control of - wait for it - Samuel Prescott BUSH. That's right. HW's grandpa!
How about that! Plenty of money to be made but for those pesky Wobblies, who were winning the battle for decent wages, pensions and good working conditions...
So they changed the law.
That's how it works.
Maybe we can have the guts to get ugly about making some real reforms on the flip side of this COVID thing. What is it Eastwood said in the Outlaw Josey Wales? "Now remember, when things look bad, and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb mad dog mean."
