Meat plant workers to Trump: Employees aren't going to show up
Source: CNN
Meat processing plant workers are concerned about President Donald Trump's executive order that compels plants to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic. Some say they expect staff will refuse to come to work.
"All I know is, this is crazy to me, because I can't see all these people going back into work," said Donald, who works at Tyson's Waterloo, Iowa, facility. "I don't think people are going to go back in there."
On Tuesday, Trump signed the order after some companies, such as Tyson Foods, were considering only keeping 20% of their facilities open. The vast majority of processing plants could have shut down which would have reduced processing capacity in the country by as much as 80%, an official familiar with the order told CNN.
"I just don't know how they're going to do it when there are people dying and getting really sick," said an employee of Tyson's Independence, Iowa, plant. "Who's to say people are even gonna show up to work?"

This needs to be pushed to the forefront. These are workers in states that went for Trump in the last election. Their story, and the story of what Trump is doing to them now needs to be brought to the front of the national consciousness.

(3,491 posts)I said that they are in states that voted for Trump.
I never suggested that the workers be further punished for how they voted. (You didn't suggest that either - but others in this subthread have suggested that).

(3,491 posts)I said they were in states that went for Trump. One person interviewed from the article worked for a plant in Iowa.
I did not say that the workers at the plant voted for Trump. Nor did I say that they should be punished for how they voted.

(296 posts)Most of the workers at TYSON'S (formerly IBP) are immigrants--as is true all over the meat packing industry. Black Hawk county is usually reliably DEMOCRAT leaning in it's politics. Significant minority communities, (African American, Bosnian, Latino, etc.) Most have come here over the decades for work in either meat packing or farm equipment or other manufacturing--John Deere, Chamberlain, CASE, etc. Neighbor who works at TYSON waterloo plant informed me, that plant workers were tested this past weekend--with approx. 44% testing positive. Deaths have already occurred, more to follow sadly. Yea, to some, we are referred to with the same contemptuous tone which some used when describing the Vietnam War soldiers--(during the war) I'm of that age--it ended shortly b4 I was eligible for the draft--Big sigh of relief as you can imagine--no possible college deferment in the future so very glad it ended. But I don't agree with ANYONE being treated as expendable even if we are just; The Niggers, The Spics, and The Hics. (that's what we were called then. and I swear sometimes that's how we're viewed now!) We are all created EQUAL and should be treated as such. Those workers in those plants--some of whom I know--are the same as the workers in those plants when I worked those kinds of jobs. They have Lives, they Love their Families, They Love Their Kids, and Their Kids Love Them. I Hope they are given the chance to stay safe, and given the same opportunities I had. Period.

A government official has no right to tell a business when it can and can't operate for a pandemic. It infringes on their Constitutional rights. Maga.
But....
Trump is a hero for signing an order forcing business to stay open during a pandemic. Maga.

(3,491 posts)I said this was in states that went for Trump. That is a fact.
Others have tried to spin this into an opportunity to punish people for how they voted. That is about as far from my intent as you can possibly get.
My point was this is Trump directly hurting people in a state that went for him in the last election. This needs to get pushed in the media to try to get that state (and others) to go against him in the next election.
Maybe some people in that state who voted for him last time won't vote for him this time.
Maybe some people that didn't vote last time will come out and vote for Biden this time.
That was my point.

First, they can stay away from unsafe industries.
Second, they can compete by offering their services to those who WILL respect their work safety.

(111,974 posts)While there aren't official statistics, the truth is that the unemployment rate is at double digit rates. These workers are considered "unskilled" and some of them are not fluent in English. The jobs that are being created are mostly in the food processing and distribution sectors where social distancing isn't possible and they are also highly vulnerable due to the pandemic. My friend in Austin who is 56 years old and a college degree switched from being an Amazon delivery driver for Whole Foods to an Uber Eats driver because he wasn't making enough money to pay the bills.
I'm filling out job application forms again even though I have almost zero chance of being hired. The number of job listings in the mathematical and IT fields has decreased drastically during the hiatus. I have two other friends with college degrees who are in their fifties that are unemployed--one has been unemployed for seven months, while the other friend took a job back in August 2019 before he decided to quit because his employer was being a flake (thank goodness that his three sons have good jobs as software engineers).
My friends in academia are also concerned as to whether they will hold onto their jobs since they don't know whether students will choose to enroll if they can't step foot on a college campus. Some of the students are contemplating taking a gap year to see how things will settle down. My alma mater saw a 20% drop in their endowment and while they remain in a strong financial condition, they have already cancelled various construction and maintenance projects that would have occurred this summer. While they are maintaining the grounds of the campus and have not laid off any workers, there will come a point where it will be necessary. There isn't much need for a janitorial staff to empty the trash cans in the dorms and offices when the campus is nearly empty. The same applies to the food service workers and bookstore employees because there isn't any demand for their services.
There isn't going to be any green energy development with the price of oil at such decreased levels. Most people are not going to invest in energy efficient systems with the price of energy being so low. Most people won't have the income to convert to green energy programs while surviving on an unemployment check.
Municipalities that went "green" were already backing out of their commitments prior to the pandemic because the prices of green energy were becoming too expensive (e.g., Georgetown, Texas was 100% renewable energy, but backed away because the costs for wind power weren't competitive and they had to hike the price to ratepayers).

The economy has cratered and even if all businesses were to reopen at full capacity, the employment prospects for both skilled and unskilled workers are not going to improve very quickly. People that are over 50 years old may have to come to the terms with the fact that they won't ever be employed again or that they will have to take jobs that make only 50% of what they previously earned.

There's always been a disconnect between what's advertised and what's real.
If New York's politicians can think about greening, so can the rest of us ...
Next, we have to create opportunities to leverage new private investment in our green economy.
For instance, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority which has been doing excellent work controls a private market for the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits and Zero Emission Credits, allowing utilities to invest in clean energy to comply with environmental laws.
We should allow private property owners to purchase them as well. We should also create statewide carbon trading permitting energy producers, businesses and building owners to swap credits that add value to emissions reduction efforts.

(111,974 posts)I have no vehicle, no assets to start over with, and I don't live in the Austin area. If I take a job away from where I live, then I would have to begin my new career living at a homeless shelter. The few friends that I had that could help me out are either unemployed themselves or in living situations which are unusual.
Considering that I have diabetes, bipolar depression, am unable to stand or walk for more than brief spurts, and that I am part of the long-term unemployed that never found work after the Great Recession the chances that I will find a job are nearly zero. A few weeks ago I woke up and lost complete motor coordination in my left hand--I couldn't type, tie my shoes, or button my clothing for about a week. I've had complete strangers look at me and tell me that I appear to be disabled plus three psychiatrists also state that I was permanently disabled. I fell through the cracks when I applied for SSDI and I went through the entire appeal process.
It isn't that I haven't tried, but my skills have also become somewhat obsolete and I don't have any money for retraining. I'm about to turn 55 in slightly over a month and while I don't reveal my age on any of my applications or resume, there isn't much interest to hire someone that age when they can find candidates that are more suitable to the job functions. It's been over a year since my last interview and while my mental skills are still relatively strong, the complete lack of physical stamina was affecting me nearly fifteen years ago. I was lucky to hold out for as long as I did while I was employed, but I wouldn't be able to work the 70-80 hour work weeks again. I've made my contribution to society as a state employee and working for an insurance company. I also volunteered as treasurer and president of a public employees group, and tutored a couple of college students while I was employed. It wasn't as though I didn't care or lacked ambition.

Why doesnt he cut and pack the meat? The top 6 execs there are making around $40m. They could help. They are probably making as much, if not more, than all their staff combined.
Clearly from the structuring of salaries, these execs must be some sort of supermen. They should be able to cut and pack the same volume as their staff
