US virus deaths top 2,000, doubling in two days

Source: Omaha World Herald-AP-CNN

Associated Press, CNN

The coronavirus continued its unrelenting spread across the United States, pummeling major cities like New York, Detroit, New Orleans and Chicago, where an infant that tested positive for the virus died Saturday. It made its way, too, into rural America, where hotspots erupted in ski havens in the Rockies and small towns in the Midwest.

USA Today and the Washington Post reported U.S. virus deaths so far totaled more than 2,000 as of Saturday, doubling in less than 72 hours.

Worldwide infections surpassed the 650,000 mark with more than 30,000 deaths as new cases also stacked up quickly in Europe, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. leads the world in reported cases with more than 115,000, but five countries exceed its death toll of around 1,800: Italy, Spain, China, Iran and France. Italy alone now has more than 10,000 deaths, the most of any country.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Saturday that an infant with COVID-19 died and the cause of death is under investigation. Officials didn't release other information about the infant, who was from Chicago's Cook County, including whether the child had other health issues.

Many in this country won't twig to how serious this is, until there are several thousands dying a day, and that is ones paying attention.

Most people won't blame Trump for unnecessary deaths either. They won't understand the distinction between the virus as an act of God and what Trump failed to do to prevent those unnecessary deaths.

Just like school shootings, it will be tragedy and..........thoughts and prayers.

I have said this from day one. It has to hit home for some people to wake up. They will never be thinking of others' first or be unselfish. It is all about #1, me, myself and I.

If one scrolls down, there's a graph of U.S. cases. Currently it shows it in linear scale. Click on "logarithmic".

Why logarithmic? Because on a logarithmic scale (really a semi-logarithmic scale: the total cases is on a logarithmic scale while the dates are on a linear scale),

a straight line with a positive slope represents a constant percent increase. And that's about what we've got: a straight line. About 8 or 9 days for each 10-fold increase.

If that keeps up, by about April 15 we will have a couple more 10-fold increases, meaning 101,000 cases X 10 X 10 = 10,100,000 cases. By April 24: 101 million cases. (I'm sure the percentage rate of increase will start slowing down before then, given that proportionally there are fewer uninfected people left to infect).

A couple graphs further down is total deaths, which one can also put on a logarithmic scale. It's pretty much a straight line too. Actually the slope is slightly increasing, meaning the percentage rate of increase is increasing. It's now also at about 8-9 days per 10-fold increase.

The preceding 10-fold increase took 13 days.

Italy and Spain -- the hardest hit of the European countries -- are starting to see a slow-down in the percentage rate of increase -- i.e. it's taking more days to do a 10-fold increase. Still a disastrous rate of increase.

No medicine, no idea what it was or why it was happening. Those afflicted cast as sinners and deserving of their fate. Religion preaching blood and fire, penance and salvation. We've made progress over the centuries against disease - plague, cholera, flu, polio, leprosy. But new diseases arise to plague us. I suppose the same could be said of wars, dictators, cancers. It's just the human condition.

is pretty inhumane, isn't it. Whenever we think we have made great strides as a society or culture or even species we are brought back to reality. We aren't so great after all.

Albeit for political purposes perhaps, so they can BLAME some group (lesbians, AIDS, same-sex marriage, football on Sundays) for incurring gods wrath.

After 500 years of scientific breakthroughs, they still can't see beyond that badly-written book.

There's an agency behind it. It's not random, because humans like finding patterns, agency, and seriously dislike randomness.

Things will progress exponentially worse from here until it reaches it's peak, whenever that is. From what I've seen on the roads and in the parking lots of the stores that are open, not too many are taking this seriously. The United States is fucked, fucked because of it's citizens' abject stupidity. The thing is, these people are going to prolong this crisis, and kill a lot of other people who are taking this seriously.

In late February or early March, Trump - chafing at the criticisms of his administration's pitiful handling of the coming COVID-19 - tweeted that during H1N1, hundreds of thousands were sickened and 13,000 died. It was a swipe, of course, at Obama, the point being, look how many people Obama let die!

We're going to hit 13,000 for COVID-19, for sure. Maybe soon.

There is a tweet for everything, but Trump's bizarre predictions of his own failures will never be quite so sad.

The United States Announces Assistance To Combat the Novel Coronavirus
PRESS STATEMENT

MICHAEL R. POMPEO, SECRETARY OF STATE

FEBRUARY 7, 2020

This week the State Department has facilitated the transportation of nearly 17.8 tons of donated medical supplies to the Chinese people, including masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials. These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people.

Today, the United States government is announcing it is prepared to spend up to $100 million in existing funds to assist China and other impacted countries, both directly and through multilateral organizations, to contain and combat the novel coronavirus. This commitment – along with the hundreds of millions generously donated by the American private sector – demonstrates strong U.S. leadership in response to the outbreak.
