Trump Raises Idea Of Quarantine Affecting NY, NJ And Conn.

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Donald Trump floated the idea of a quarantine as early as Saturday affecting residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut for a short time to stop the spread of coronavirus from reaching states with fewer infections.

Trump told reporters at the White House that he had spoken with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, among others, and that "a lot of the states that are infected but don't have a big problem, they've asked me if I'll look at it so we're going to look at it."

But Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-N.Y., who has criticized the federal government's response as his state became the country's virus epicenter, said the issue had not come up in a conversation he had with Trump earlier Saturday. "I don't even know what that means," he said at a briefing in New York. " I don't know how that could be legally enforceable, and from a medical point of view, I don't know what you would be accomplishing. ... I don't like the sound of it."

The federal government is empowered under the law to take measures to prevent the spread of communicable diseases between states, but it's not clear that means Trump can order state residents to stay put. But before Trump spoke in Norfolk, Virginia, as a U.S. Navy medical ship left for New York City to help with pandemic response there, he tweeted: "I am giving consideration to a QUARANTINE of developing "hot spots", New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. A decision will be made, one way or another, shortly."...

Trump said the idea of isolating many in the three Democratic strongholds in the NE was pushed by FL Gov. DeSantis, one of the president's most outspoken supporters. It comes a day after Trump made clear he wanted governors to be grateful when asking for federal support for the pandemic.

Trump said people "go to Florida and an a lot of people don't want that. So we'll see what happens."

who has so far refused to institute any stay-at-home orders in his own state of Florida, which has nearly 3,600 cases (and rapidly rising numbers) and 54 deaths. To say that Florida doesn't have a big problem is willful blindness.

I guess that is how he values human life. Pennsylvania is a swing state that shares miles and miles of borders with NJ and N.Y.

Today the Pennsylvania Department of Health says there are now 2,751 cases of coronavirus in the state. The latest number was updated Saturday at 12 noon.

The new total marks an increase of 533 cases in one day of COVID-19.

Trump floats quarantine for New York

Martin Pengelly

Here’s the White House pool report on what Trump said just now:

We’d like to see NY quarantined because it’s a hotspot – New York, New Jersey, maybe one or two other places, certain parts of Connecticut quarantined. I’m thinking about that right now. We might not have to do it but there’s a possibility that sometime today we’ll do a quarantine – short-term two weeks for New York, probably New Jersey and parts of Connecticut.”

He's trying to convince the rest of the states that might vote for him that he is protecting them from New Yorkers.

I think Cuomo has had this gamed out weeks in advance, hence the heartfelt daily press conferences. Trump has lost this round before he's begun.

And flights and trains and buses leaving or entering those states would have to be canceled.
