Trump Says He Told Pence to Ignore Governors in Hard-Hit Areas If They Are 'Not Appreciative'

Source: The Daily Beast

As the U.S. death toll reached 1,500, the president says he told the head of the White House’s coronavirus task force not to bother calling state governors in some hot spot areas.

Shortly after the U.S. death toll from the coronavirus pandemic reached 1,500 on Friday, President Donald Trump took to the podium at a White House press briefing and complained that certain state’s governors are not “appreciative” enough of the federal government’s help—so much so that he said he’d told Vice President Mike Pence, the leader of the coronavirus task force, to skip calling governors of some hard-hit areas.

Trump singled out the Democratic leaders of Washington and Michigan, noting that he had advised Pence not to call them as the healthcare crisis plagues their states and people fall sick and die.

“He calls all the governors,” Trump said. “I tell him, I mean, I'm a different type of person. I say Mike, don't call the governor of Washington, you're wasting your time with him. Don't call the woman in Michigan.”

“If they don't treat you right, I don't call,” Trump said. Michigan’s health department is reporting 3,657 COVID-19 cases and 92 deaths. In Washington, there have been 3,700 cases, according to the state, and 175 deaths.

Maybe the individual states should at least start the conversation about secession since the Federal government is abrogating its part of the deal. I dunno, see if Canada will take them in.

Trump wins Michigan, one of the many surprise victories for him in 2016 that got him elected, and now he is effectively saying "fuck" those people because their Governor is mean to me. Let's hope the people in Michigan remember that in November.

The governors of California, Oregon, Washington, Michigan and New York just need to say, “Really? OK then, fuck you Donnie, we’re withholding our Federal tax dollars until you give us our supplies.”

Trump clearly thinks he’s some kind of king. It’s time to put this fuckwad in his place.

The money (most of it) flows in the other direction.

Employer withholding—>IRS—>Federal Treasury—>States (in the form of block grants for roads, medicaid, Title 1 education grants, etc.). There’s no mechanism for states to withhold taxes paid to the Federal government. States don’t pay taxes to the Federal government. Individuals do, usually through their employers, and then that money gets doled out to the states according to the formula established by the Federal congress.

The family was on speaker phone with the in-laws and my mom catching up on things.

We had the presser on mute but I could tell from Johnathan Karl's (I believe that was the reporter) expression on disbelief that Trump had just said something stupid or outrageous.

I muted our call and said to my wife "I don't know what just happened but something just happened".

The "cutie pie" bit was later.

That's not to say they deserved to die, that's not MY view.

But I'd like to point out that it's HIS view.

Those dead tRump voters in WA and MI didn't back him fully enough, or their states wouldn't have Dem governors. The voters in those states weren't sufficiently devoted to tRump. In his view.

He measured those dead Americans, and found them lacking. So he can dismiss their deaths.

Even the ones who voted for him.
