New York could see apex of hospital demand in 21 days, governor says

March 27 (Reuters) - New York could see a peak in the demand for hospital capacity in three weeks due to the coronavirus, and is planning to build a total of 8 temporary hospitals to meet the surge, Governor Andrew Cuomo told a news conference on Friday.
Cuomo, speaking against a backdrop of makeshift hospital beds at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, also said schools should remain closed for another two weeks until April 15th.
The governor has become a leading national voice on the coronavirus pandemic as the state has accounted for roughly one-third of the national death toll and half the known number of cases.
Cuomo said 44,635 people have tested positive in New York, up about 7,400 from Thursday, and that 519 New Yorkers have died from the virus, up from the previous day's total of 385 deaths.

(48,955 posts)He said he wouldn't help states when Washington, California, and especially New York said they need them. He said they should buy them on open markets. Then feds have been outbidding states for them. But he will deny he directed them to do so.
Later, when it starts biting the red states, he will dramatically say that now is the time for federal government to provide them.
It is funny how easily trumpanzees and Republicons embrace socialism that benefits them. Especially corporate welfare.

(17,382 posts)It is too bad that neither the CDC or NY State actually publish their projections and models. For example, UW publicly discloses their data and it shows a maximum possible demand of 45,000 Beds. 11,000 Ventilators for New York.

I know Cuomo wants to be conservative, but there are other areas of the country in desperate demand for ventilators.

(17,382 posts)I know that folks are worried that their projections may prove too low or too high, but it would help sort out the basis for everyone claims. Finally, a reasonable estimate of what the numbers will look like under different scenarios might help people adequately prepare for whats to come.
Even with social distancing and closure measures in effect, we can still expect about 80,000 deaths. Of course, if Trump gets his way, these numbers could sky rocket.
