Jair Bolsonaro continued to minimize the impact of the novel coronavirus and encouraged Brazilians to cut their quarantine shortadvice that goes against health experts and a worldwide trend.
The president intensified his political fight with governors and members of Congress, lost more allies, talked about democratic instability. State governors ignored him and decided to maintain their restrictive measures.
Bolsonaro's speech on Tuesday (24), which attacked the press and defended the resumption of school, was repudiated by those in medicine and politics. General Hamilton Mourão even went against the president and supported isolation.
Not only did the president's position provoke an official meeting with João Doria (PSDB), a potential opponent for 2022, but it also led to the break with former allies, such as Ronaldo Caiado (DEM-GO) and Commander Moisés (PSL-SC).

(1,040 posts)... in Belo Horizonte. Presumptive positive; test results pending. He was scheduled to leave the country tomorrow, but that flight has been cancelled. Thankfully the doctors there, in addition to the Minas Gerais governor, are not listening to this idiot, and are enforcing quarantines. The US Embassy website for Brazil clearly warns US citizens in country that they can be prosecuted by local authorities for breaking local quarantines, with little judicial recourse. Hell, even the organized crime groups in the favelas around Rio and Sao Paulo have essentially taken over, telling the government in a statement (and I'm paraphrasing here) that says, "if the government won't take care of things -- we will."
Bottom line, just like here, the "President" of Brazil is a tool, but the local and state governments are stepping up to help their people.
