Scientists warned that the United States someday would become the country hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. That moment arrived on Thursday.
In the United States, at least 81,321 people are known to have been infected with the coronavirus, including more than 1,000 deaths more cases than China, Italy or any other country has seen, according to data gathered by The New York Times.
With 330 million residents, the United States is the worlds third most populous nation, meaning it provides a vast pool of people who can potentially get Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.
And it is a sprawling, cacophonous democracy, where states set their own policies and President Trump has sent mixed messages about the scale of the danger and how to fight it, ensuring there was no coherent, unified response to a grave public health threat.

(35,282 posts)Cuomo should be proud.
If NY were its own country, it would be #6 for cases.
Ahead of Iran or France.
Only #7 for deaths. It's ahead of Bojo's UK, however, so there's grounds for pride.
I'm going to guess that stay-at-home orders are more useful than providing a few thousand test kits when there were so many more infections.

(5,060 posts)massive lack of testing, this number is only a small fraction of actual cases.

Inescapable conclusion: many more deaths down the road.

(1,822 posts)Washington and Colorado are def gonna push that number higher. The other 4 states will probably add a 100 or so. Its looking like well go north of 15,000 for the day. The part thats getting scary is that several states are starting to become hot spots. 9 states will have over 3000 cases by this weekend. If this doesnt slow and soon there will be 5 New Yorks.
