Gov. J.B. Pritzker issues order requiring residents to 'stay at home' starting Saturday

Source: Chicago Tribune

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a “shelter-in-place” order for the entire state starting Saturday, essentially commanding residents to stay in their homes as officials take drastic measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Pritzker announced the directive at a 3 p.m. Friday news conference along with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Details were still being worked out on Friday.

Residents can still go to the grocery stores, put gas in their cars, take walks outside and make pharmacy runs. All local roads, including the interstate highways and tollways, will remain open to traffic, as well.

I don't know if it's the Tribune or the governor that is mixing this up, but those are two very different concepts.

Shelter-in-place means you don't walk out of your door. We have shelter-in-place occasionally in the Chemical Valleys of West Virginia. The worst of a shelter-in-place involves duct tape around the door and window frames to keep the outside air outside.

Stay-at-home is more like the description above - "Residents can still go to the grocery stores, put gas in their cars, take walks outside and make pharmacy runs. All local roads, including the interstate highways and tollways, will remain open to traffic, as well."

But SiP is now in common use for this circumstance.
Think the horse is through the gate on the distinction.
