Trump officials discuss tax cuts, other emergency measures in hopes of tackling coronavirus fallout
Source: Washington Post
Trump administration officials are holding preliminary conversations about economic responses to the coronavirus, as the stock market fell sharply again on Friday amid international fears about the outbreak, according to five people with knowledge of the planning.
Among the options being considered are pursuing a targeted tax cut package, these people said. They have also discussed whether the White House should lean even harder on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, though the central bank on Friday afternoon said it would step in if necessary.
No decisions at the White House have been reached on these options, and officials stressed conversations remained preliminary and extremely fluid.
Vice President Pences office is involved in the discussion of possible responses, two people said.

(17,984 posts)Tax cuts to stop a virus! I have a better suggestion. Hire back all the Scientists you have fired, give them the money and the freedom to come up with a Vaccine!
They did that for Polio, Small Pox and evening invented Penicillin!
Fire Doctor Pence and hire experts! Then fire Trump, Mitch and the whole Republican Congress!
There! Fixed it!

(45,430 posts)no more tax cuts! Dumbass has fired and cut the people who could help stop this pandemic. Dude needs to be thrown out of office and hopefully thrown in prison.
He'll bully the Fed to lower interest rates again. We'll see if Jerome Powell can stay strong this time and not cave.

(391 posts)All they have been talking about is having rate cuts but all that a rate cut does is make it cheaper to borrow which provides liquidity. The market correction is from the virus but also from profit taking. Neither of these events have removed liquidity from the market. The only thing a fed cut would do is give them an excuse to start buying again without any real economics behind it. It's all just a sad cycle of pump and dump now. This has hasn't been a well ordered market in years.

(21,312 posts)that just having the fed cut interest rates wouldn't solve the problem. 73% of our GDP comes from consumer spending, so it looks like Trump needs to put some money in people's pockets that they will have to spend.

(5,383 posts)But the Economy was doing so bigly great! Best ever, Trump in charge, going up and up! To Infinity and beyond!
What went wrong?
Talk of a targeted tax cut package . . . .lean even harder on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates . . . central bank stepping in?
All desperation talk, desperation moves. Is it that bigly bad all of a sudden? In the space of 1 week?
What went wrong? Can't be that pesky virus, Trump said it was a hoax.
So what is going on? WTF is going on?
GASP! Could it be Trump knows not of what he speaks? Knows not of what he did? Knows not of what to do?
And his cronies? The same?
What's a suitable reward for such incompetence? A pay cut? A firing squad?
I bet there were a few things NOT on the 'crisis talk' agenda:
- an update on a realistic timeline for developing a vaccine.
- predicted numbers of infected people and deaths in the US when the pandemic gets going.
- beefing up medical responses to the pandemic.
But yeah, not worth discussing. After all the virus is a hoax, and if it isn't it won't affect them, because they aren't your common riffraff, they are special people, guaranteed immunity with a few quick prayers from Pence.
Now, excuse me. I've just become an end-of-world Doomsday Prepper, and I have a backyard shelter to dig. Two adults, 2 dogs, one cat, with food and water for all for 6 months. going to be a big hole!

Why?
Because, they get sick too. It is the single greatest reminder that they are not only human and have no special providence in the eyes of their god, but, deep down they fear their fawning cults will see them sick and realize, "Hey, they're only one of us." That's when things get really ugly. See: Kipling's "The Man Who Would Be King".

(3,495 posts)Dems better get their act together and provide some backstop legislation to focus future austerity measures on areas of this country that take more federal money than they generate. I would speculate on a county level, there are far more counties that take more federal revenue than they generate. On a state and federal level I would hazard to guess most federal revenue is coming from areas represented by Democrats than Republicans. I'd also speculate that the reason local taxes are so high in some areas is because these areas are not getting a good return on their tax dollars (funneled to "takers" . It becomes a vicious cycle as more tax revenue gets funneled away to other areas, local taxes go up to make up for less money coming in at the state and federal level and Repubs pounce with their "Dems are tax raisers" mantra. This has been going on entirely too long. We are getting to the point where government is going to have to start deciding how much revenue is going to be funneled to areas that are not generating tax revenue anywhere near to what they are consuming.
WE NEED AUSTERITY PROTECTION LEGISLATION. YOU SHOULD GET BACK A LARGE PORTION OF THE TAX REVENUE YOUR AREA GENERATES.

(1,384 posts)Simple, cover all Americans without health insurance, those with trumpJunk insurance, cancel all co-pays, deductibles etc. for any problem a patient thinks is symptoms of the virus or any form of respiratory problem. Include ambulance, medications, immediate unemployment insurance if quarantined.
Having people wandering around, shedding virus, is a prescription for disaster.

At least this time around, Nancy P. is here to stop such idiotic, misdirected attempts and she should say what Moscow Mitch said before, it's an presidential election year, we shouldn't act on any tax cut or other economic proposals until afterwards.
