Kia recalls over 193,000 vehicles; fuel leaks can cause fires

Source: Omaha World Herald-AP

By Tom Krisher

DETROIT (AP) — Kia is recalling more than 193,000 cars and minvans in yet another move to fix nagging problems that could cause engine fires.

The largest of two U.S. recalls released by the government Thursday covers nearly 142,000 2013 and 2014 Optima midsize cars. They have 2.4-liter direct fuel injection or 2-liter direct injection turbocharged engines.

Kia says a fuel hose can deteriorate and crack due to engine heat. The hoses can leak and cause fires.

A fix is still being developed. The recall is expected to start April 16.

I chose a Kia because of their 10 year 100,000 warranty AND I just loved the car when I saw it. Glad they're taking care of this.

It's at least in my top 4 that I've looked at so far. The dealer I went to had this really nice black turbo model in stock.

Loved them but when I saw this Kia it was all over but the signing, I was in love. Problem was I could not get the local Kia dealer to get one for me. I had to order one through a dealer in Salt Lake City...I waited 7 months for it to arrive. I flew down and drove it home. I would do it all again. Really good experience with the Kia dealer and the CAR...oh my. Nicest thing I've ever owned....that was my nudge for you.

But I did love the one that I saw in the showroom and they were offering some pretty nice discounts on it since it was a '19 model.

But right now my top 4 are:

1. Subaru Legacy
2. Toyota Camry
3. Honda Accord
4. Kia Optima / Hyundai Sonata (tie)
5. Volkswagen Passat

The Ford Fusion was previously my #5 but dropped off because of an extremely terrible experience that I had at the dealer.

everybody drives a Subaru. Mostly Outbacks though. Super reliable and our roads are a mess 8 months out of the year. All the cars on your list are nice. You must not need AWD or 4WD much?

Yeah I've test driven pretty much everything in the ~$32K range. There were a lot I liked, some I didn't like and then that Ford dealer killed pretty much any chance I had of buying a Ford.

Those high pressure fuel pumps can often operate in the several THOUSAND PSI range... pretty crazy.

I wonder if these fuel lines are before the high pressure pump...

...and just sitting in the driveway without even being running, it burst into flames. Luckily, he had not pulled it under the carport.
