Israeli scientists: 'In a few weeks, we will have coronavirus vaccine

Source: Jerusalem Post

Israeli scientists are on the cusp of developing the first vaccine against the novel coronavirus, according to Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis. If all goes as planned, the vaccine could be ready within a few weeks and available in 90 days, according to a release.

But they are saying they've been working on a vaccine for a similar virus, and that has already been tested. I admit that I don't know enough to be able to judge their process, but I do know that vaccines need extensive testing before they can be distributed. Nevertheless, given the specifics here, maybe there's some reason for cautious hope.

can be sped up considerably. In a real emergency the urgency of getting a vaccine on the market as soon as possible will be deemed worth the risk of conducting fewer time consuming trials. It would be a risk but perhaps a risk worth taking.

I worked for 35 years for a fortune 500 Pharma company.
There's no way they could do the work to create a safe and effective vaccine that quickly. I wouldn't take this vaccine; too risky.

There's no way they could assess the side effects in 90 days.
If it works, they're heros.
If it doesn't they make excuses.

In either event they achieve their goal of making a huge profit.

I posted it without commentary for a reason. I do not necessarily believe it, but thought it interesting as a vague possibility since they say that they had been working on a similar virus, which is more than anyone else has done (as far as I know). There's a lab in Houston, apparently, that was working on a SARS vaccine, but their funding dried up once that virus petered out. All the other current vaccine candidates that I've read about seem to work with a genetic sequencing model, which is promising, but different from this process (as far as I understand). Either way, just shared because I think it's interesting and worth discussing.

Today I was talking to a microbiologist over there and that was what she told me. 3 months to go from chickens to human clinical trials, which means it is at best 15-18 months away from being available for use.

Are you seriously suggesting Arab Israelis are subject to Apartheid restrictions?

If so, the Israelis are really bad at it, since Arab Israelis have full protection under law, are the wealthiest Arabs, per capita, in the world, as a group are the highest educated people in Israel, and, as for Nazarene Arabs, the richest demographic in all of Israel.

That's not enough time to test it for safety.

Vaccines in the past that weren't tested thoroughly enough sometimes had side effects worse than the disease and sometimes would make people even more susceptible to the virus.

You should probably say failed experimental vaccines to avoid creating anti-vaccine hysteria. And yes, when we tested some vaccine candidates in the past sometimes the choice of adjuvant caused a very nasty response.

There's an important distinction between promising treatments for the sick, which may be available in short order, and a tested, effective vaccine to protect a large, healthy population.

According to the article, scientists are developing a vaccine for infectious bronchitis in poultry, for which pre-clinical trials have been successful. COVID-19 has a similar infection mechanism, and Now that COVID-19 is sequenced, they can adjust the vaccine to the new virus.

My reading of this is that they may produce an untested vaccine shortly. If everything goes right with a heavy emphasis on lifting regulatory obstacles, they promise to have a usable vaccine.

Contrast this with the guidance from the director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. He spelled out a safety and efficacy trial schedule that takes a year.
