Over 1,000 gather in Richmond to oppose abortion bills

Source: Associated Press

Sarah Rankin, Associated Press Updated 4:43 pm CST, Thursday, February 13, 2020

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — More than 1,000 people rallied at the Virginia Capitol on Thursday, protesting legislation advancing in the Democratic-controlled General Assembly that would ease restrictions on abortion access.

Speakers urged the crowd that gathered in a steady rain to pressure lawmakers to vote against bills that they say would undo regulations that protect pregnant women. They encouraged attendees to join anti-abortion advocacy groups to push back against Democrats who retook control of the General Assembly in November, and they vowed to unseat members of the new majority.

“Virginia has taken a wrong left turn. But we're here today to let all inside this Capitol know that we will never rest and we will never relent in our commitment to putting this Commonwealth back on the right course," said Republican Del. Kathy Byron.

Both the House and Senate have passed bills to undo restrictions on abortion access that were enacted when the legislature was under GOP control, including a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion and a requirement that women seeking an abortion undergo an ultrasound and counseling.

Headline should be "Over 1,000 anti-American enemies of the civil rights of innocent citizens mob Richmond to oppose bills protecting those innocent citizens' rights."

If a vicious mob of 1,000 anti-American enemies of any OTHER civil right held a hate march on the streets, good people would rightly be enraged.

Wonder why these hate marches continue to be tolerated?

Here are some pictures:

In the words of George Mason:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Happy 294th Birthday, George Mason. Founding Founder, He Conceived the Bill of Rights.

Full disclosure: I attended George Mason Elementary School, so I, especially, have to stick up for the guy and those swell amendments of his.

to advocate that the civil rights of innocent citizens be forcibly stripped away? That's vicious, and 1,000+ anti-American enemies of innocent citizens' rights is a mob.

Again - If a vicious mob of 1,000 anti-American enemies of any OTHER civil right held a hate march on the streets, good people would rightly be enraged.

And again - Wonder why these hate marches continue to be tolerated?

These people are exercising one of the rights specifically spelled out in the Bill of Rights.

Please show me any evidence of violence in those photographs.

I was born in Virginia, where we are expected to have an appreciation for the things that Virginians have written. That includes the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. I hope that such an appreciation does not stop at the Commonwealth's borders.

The right counts for everyone, or it doesn't count for anyone.

Thank you.

I consider this to be covert violence - a vicious street mob, actively agitating to criminalize innocent citizens, and threatening to erase their 14th Amendment rights - SOLELY because they are female - wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross:

I cannot think of any other mob threats to any other civil rights that, on DU, would just be shrugged off as "peaceable assembly". There would be commentary that if the mob is "peaceable" (i.e., no overt physical violence) then technically they are within their rights - but there would also be accompanying commentary that what the mob are advocating for is shameful and un-American.

Can you imagine that mob photo with confederate flags, white hoods, and posters supporting racial subjugation? Would the covert violence be more visible then?
