Coronavirus death toll leaps in China's Hubei province
Source: Reuters
The Chinese province at the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak reported a record rise in the death toll on Thursday, as global health experts warned the epidemic could get far worse before it is brought under control.
Health officials in Hubei province said 242 people had died from the flu-like virus on Wednesday, the fastest rise in the daily count since the pathogen was identified in December, and bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 1,310. The previous record rise in the toll was 103 on Feb. 10.

But the 2,015 new confirmed cases reported in mainland China on Wednesday was dwarfed by the 14,840 new cases reported in Hubei alone on Thursday, when provincial officials said they had adopted a new methodology for counting infections.

CNBC clarified Thursday's numbers this way:
The province said it is starting to include clinically diagnosed cases in its figures and that 13,332 of the new cases fall under that classification.
The government said that a total of 1,310 people have died in the province and that 48,206 people have been infected in the region.

China has been gut punched by the tariffs and now the corona-virus over the last year.
Wuhan is real close to Shanghai....I wonder how infected Shanghai is?

Basically, this counts many more of the mild cases than before.

(8,020 posts)it, I believe they will control it, don't see any reason why they can't. China has the people & the resources to do this. If this happened 20, 30 yrs ago they would be FUBAR.

(6,172 posts)My guess is that we still don't have anywhere near a true accounting of the extent of the Coronavirus epidemic there.
Another country that will need to be looked at is North Korea.
That place is a black box for information, and their health care is miserable.
Add to that a population that is underfed and you have a recipe for even greater infection rates and death tolls.
And, we know there is travel between the two countries at many points along their 880 mile long border.

"As a result, another new 14,840 cases were reported in the central province on Thursday, from 2,015 new cases nationwide a day earlier. But excluding cases confirmed using the new methods, the number of new cases rose by only 1,508." If they are using a CT scan then they are diagnosing pneumonia which is not a mild presentation of this infection. The virus inhibits the cilia in the airways from functioning, which helps the lungs to get rid of infection. This could be unilateral or bilateral pneumo, but this virus can progress rapidly to the patient needing O2, mech ventilation and dialysis. Not good at all. I hope that drug (remdevisir) gets mass produced and they have a vaccine asap. Of course China wants to patent the drug, even though they didn't create it. And Gilead has to allow them rather than fight it. What bullshit. Thanks Chinese govt. Maybe if you had shut down the damned markets that put people at risk this may not have happened.
