MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) President Donald Trump abused his power and shouldnt be in office, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, a fellow Republican, said Thursday in a rare dissent from within party ranks.
The U.S. Senate should have been allowed to hear from more witnesses who could have provided evidence about the charges against the president, Scott, a frequent Trump critic, said at a news conference.
After being asked about the presidents acquittal Wednesday in the Senate, Scott said the outcome was almost a foregone conclusion.
If theyd taken more testimony, maybe theyd have had more information and maybe other senators would have acted appropriately, Scott said.
Vermont Republican Gov. Phil Scott, speaking on Thursday Feb. 6, 2020 at the Statehouse in Montpelier, Vt., said he thought President Donald Trump abused his power and he doesn't think the president should be in office. Scott also praised Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, the only Republican to break ranks with his party and vote to convict Trump. Scott has been a frequent critic of the president. (AP Photo/Wilson Ring)
