DHS blocks New Yorkers from enrolling in 'trusted traveler' programs over sanctuary law
Source: Politico
DHS will no longer let New Yorkers enroll in several programs intended to expedite international travel, in response to a recently-enacted state "sanctuary" law which limits DHS' access to state driver's license records.
The unprecedented suspension, which will shutter several programs that allow people to breeze through security lines in exchange for having their information pre-vetted, comes a day after President Donald Trump used his State of the Union address in part to blast sanctuary cities, saying "there are many cities in America where radical politicians have chosen to provide sanctuary for these criminal illegal aliens," and suggesting that localities that block the release of information allow "dangerous criminal aliens to prey upon the public, instead of handing them over to ICE to be safely removed."
In a letter to New York state's Department of Motor Vehicles, which was first reported by Fox News, acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf wrote that because of a state law signed in June preventing DMV officials from giving information to ICE and CBP, New York residents will be prohibited from enrolling in DHS programs including Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST. The letter does not refer to TSA's PreCheck program.
The first three are CBP programs which help expedite security for travelers upon arrival to the U.S., and FAST is a commercial clearance program for low-risk shipments.

My current Global Entry/PreCheck card expires in 2022.

(9,351 posts)It was a pain in the neck to do and I was held up about ten months before they finally gave the ok.
LittleGirl
(8,261 posts)my renewal last year, 9 months in advance and they didn't complete it until a month after it expired.
They said the bottleneck was the government shutdown in 2018!

(9,351 posts)I went to as many exotic places as I could ding the previous five years. Pakistan, Iran, the five Stans along with the usual places in the Far East, Africa and Europe. Just trying to get to places before my body gives out. Figured that that had flagged my application.
Friend of mine applied a few weeks after I and had hers back within a month.

(9,880 posts)Global Entry requires a US passport. Illegal immigrants do not have a US passport, so claims that DHS cant do its job are bogus. I dont know the other programs listed, but I would think they also require a valid passport. My Global Entry expires next year so I'm hoping we have a Democrat as president and we can return some sanity to government operations like this.

(93,851 posts)It has nothing to do with Airline priority travel classes. PreCheck is a Government "trusted traveler" program, which means that the traveler has gone through a background check by DHS to determine that they can be trusted not to wear explosive shoes and hide illegal items in their toiletries bag. There's an $85 processing fee to cover the background check and the card is good for five years ($17/year); far less than the cost of obtaining a Passport.

(5,898 posts)I despise the two tier system we've concocted here for no particular reason. What happened to equality under the law?

(45,256 posts)I get what you're saying, that it costs money to get these background check programs, but try experiencing what brown people go through. There's no other way to understand it.
My class-based metal credit card covers 100% of the cost. There are other class-based associations and discounts available for those who struggle to pay the $100 global entry or $85 precheck. International travel is a frequent issue for immigrant families with relatives overseas. Business travelers and vacationers could probably afford it.
Maybe one of our socialist candidates can propose a way to cover the costs for those who can't afford it.

(16,138 posts)Free food at conferences. Free fishing trips for executives. Cadillac health care for the c-suite.
Meanwhile, pencils and paper are rationed in schools, and poor neighborhoods are dodging bullets on their walk to the convenience store grocer where they pay three times as much as suburban costsco shoppers, after getting their payday loans.
The people making a lot of the stuff we buy are sick and suffering in China, invisible and not the subject of much public empathy. Dystopia-R-Us.

It's slightly less invisible to me since I've been all over China and seen the children (whole families including grandparents and young kids) making stuff that Americans like to buy. A lot of DUers think those "sick and suffering" Chinese are stealing jobs away from American workers. There is a lot of that, and there is a lot of exploitation of starving people who don't mind a complete lack of safety regulations, but people like money. And rich people like getting richer.
Somewhere, someone, somehow thinks I'm the problem not them. And vice versa.

I haven't bothered, don't travel internationally enough, so I'll just take off my shoes.

(16,138 posts)Its unAmerican to let the government give shorter waiting times to people who have an extra $100 etc, at the expense of those who dont.
But I fly a lot. So Im a hypocrite.

(8,593 posts)Washington is a sanctuary state, I think California and Oregon is too.
So far nothing. I would not think you can selectively do actions like this.
This will get thrown out in court.

(45,256 posts)They could easily exchange information relevant only to trusted traveler programs. They're choosing to be evil hoping enough US citizens, especially white ones, will buckle under pressure.
As soon as that orange pile of toxic waste took office my Mom made sure we all enrolled in global entry and TSA precheck knowing fully well his supporters will say we're "not American" since we're brown. Mine expires in 2021 and I hope we have a very different president in the white house then.
