Pentagon prepping housing for 1,000 people over coronavirus concerns

Source: CNN

By Barbara Starr and Kevin Bohn,

(CNN)The Pentagon said Saturday that Defense Secretary Mark Esper has approved a request to provide military housing for up to 1,000 people who may need to be quarantined upon arrival in the United States from overseas travel due to concerns about possible infection from coronavirus.

The Pentagon said the Department of Health and Human Services requested that the Defense Department provide several facilities capable of housing at least 250 people in individual rooms through February 29. The Pentagon said the locations selected to assist, if needed, are: the 168th Regiment, Regional Training Institute in Fort Carson, Colorado; the Travis Air Force Base in California; the Lackland Air Force Base in Texas; the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California.

"Under the request, DOD will only provide housing support, while HHS will be responsible for all care, transportation, and security of the evacuees. DOD personnel will not be directly in contact with the evacuees and evacuees will not have access to any base location other than their assigned housing," the Pentagon said in a statement.

"In accordance with (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines, all evacuees will be monitored for a period of 14 days. Should routine monitoring of the evacuees identify ill individuals, HHS has procedures in place to transport them to a local civilian hospital," the statement continued.

How in the world could there be 250 state department employees from Wuhan? State has been gutted.

Thanks.

were these State Department employees. Others were required to pay $1000 to thus GTF out of Wuhan. Many turned that offer down.

of people living from pay check to pay check with no healthcare, they will be working sick, they will be spreading it, its called survival & like the flu, it will hit hard though I don't think it will be much worse than the flu as far as deaths or spreading.

I'm not sure where the comparison between the flu and the coronavirus started, but it's wildly wrong. Coronavirus has a high hospitalization rate (~18%) while influenza this year is averaging 35.1 cases per every 100,000 infections. Coronavirus has killed at a 2% rate per the numbers in China, while influenza kills at 0.05%.

He famously did once say he'd like to come back as "a virus that would wipe humanity out."

But if he in fact feels that way, he'll only come back as a Nigerian slum dweller having to depend on some oil foul stream for his water.

Sad.

Housing for 1,000 people?

In individual rooms??

I got news for you. That’s four airplanes worth of the special Kalitta Airlines Medical Evacuation planes like we saw on Wednesday. Nowhere near what the actual demand is about to be.

There will be hundreds of thousands wanting to transport back to the USA, and there will be LOTS of screaming right-wingers shouting to close the borders, and prevent these folks from being allowed in.

It’s about to get very, very ugly, with the xenophobe-in-Chief getting anti-diseasers next into the mix.

Put them in a comfortable room with Wifi, decent food, Netflix, and some good books.

You want to make quarantine as comfortable as possible so people don't try to leave.

It's 14 days.

Time and money well spent.

I don’t foresee this being a cutting edge facility; rather one that lacks specialty equipment with the remaining being sustained on a shoe string budget...
