Fast-food chain Krystal files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

Source: 11alive.com (WXIA Atlanta)

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Fast-food chain Krystal has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in its existence. It was under bankruptcy protection once previously, in the 1990s.

The company filed its petition in federal bankruptcy court in Atlanta on Sunday, citing debts of between $50 million and $100 million.

According to the filing, among the largest creditors the company owes includes The Tombras Group media agency of Knoxville, at $4.2 million; US Foods of Rosemont, Ill., at $2.9 million; Radiant Systems of Atlanta at $560,000; and SLM Waste & Recycling of Green Lane, Pa., at $535,000.

Restaurant industry journal Nation's Restaurant News said that the company had announced a management shakeup in November, which saw Krystal Company president and CEO Paul Macaluso and chief financial officer Berry Epley both leaving the company.

However, if that's the sort of fare they served, I can honestly thank the god of clogged arteries that I haven't. That grub looks absolutely disgusting. And to think, that's undoubtedly a publicity photo designed to make their food look as appealing as possibly. One can only imagine what it looks (and smells) like in person. An image of Sly Stallone eating a rat burger in the movie Demolition Man suddenly springs to mind.

Last year, when I was visiting my mother, she took me to lunch at Krystal as a special treat. She knew how much I love White Castle, and 30 years ago, was happy with Krystal as a substitute. Now I live nowhere near either place.

I didn't tell my mother this, but those Krystal cheeseburgers were the worst food I have ever had the misfortune to eat. I wouldn't have bothered, but it would have hurt my mother's feelings too much if I'd been honest with her. It would have ruined her great surprise, especially since she never patronized fast food restaurants.

I am not surprised Krystal has had to declare bankruptcy.

White Castle's frozen cheeseburgers are good, and on a scale of 1 to 10, the frozen ones are a 10 compared to Krystal's 0, IMO. I haven't been anywhere near an actual White Castle in about 7 years, but I bet their restaurant food is still great, too.

Reasonable minds can differ. All of my kids missed out on the White Castle gene -- they absolutely hate that restaurant. This is good since it means I don't have any competition when I buy a box of frozen cheeseburgers. Maybe one has to grow up with White Castle to love it as much as I do.

White Castle joins Carl’s Jr. on the list of beloved burger joints with right-wing ties. According to a recent ThinkProgress report about companies that have helped bankroll right-wing attack ads, White Castle has given $25,000 to the Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC, a group linked to House Speaker John Boehner that is supporting conservative candidates in the November election.

A top In-N-Out executive and his wife have donated thousands of dollars to President Donald Trump, even as many brands shy away from associating with the president.

Mark Taylor, In-N-Out's chief operating officer, and his wife, Traci Taylor — who is the half-sister of In-N-Out's president and owner, Lynsi Snyder, and who lists In-N-Out as her employer — have donated more than $15,000 to Trump and the national Republican Party since August 2016.

Both Mark and Traci Taylor hit the maximum that an individual can donate to a candidate in donations to Trump in the 2016 election. In fact, both exceeded the limit and had thousands of dollars in donations returned.

Since Trump's election, the Taylors have continued to donate thousands of dollars to Trump and the Republican National Committee.

"Davenport had visited Chicago's White Castle restaurants, taking notes of successful features, before setting forth on his own venture. Davenport and Sherrill set up the first Krystal at the corner of 7th and Cherry Streets in Chattanooga. The first Krystal was a modular building constructed in Chicago and shipped to Chattanooga for final installation. The oldest Krystal still in operation is located on Cherokee Boulevard in Chattanooga's Northshore District. Krystal is the seventh or eighth-oldest hamburger chain in the United States (the oldest being White Castle)[8] and the oldest in the South."

I kind of like Krystal burgers, and particularly like them since I got my medical marijuana card. I actually thought Krystal and White Castle were essentially the same company, kind of like Checkers and Rallys.

And their corn dogs are pretty tasty. I'm not even high! But I'd like to be.

But we are soon to be getting a white Castle. Krystal better step up their game. Their stores are usually pretty dirty looking. WC will be shiny and new for a few days anyway lol.

Not a White Castle but had their appeal. Their breakfast is really really good though . Having spent the majority of my life around W.C.'s I always looked at Krystals sort of like a second tier kind of place but they have a spot at the fast food table indeed.

I knew the writing was on the wall when the only to stores here in central Texas closed.

What is that orange stuff? Is it supposed to be cheese? Cheese isn't supposed to look like cardboard.

And that yellow gloop oozing out of the bun? And what are those random brown clots in the top "burger"?

No thanks. I'll stick with Smashburger.
