MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence gave a speech Sunday in remembrance of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at a church service in Tennessee.

Pence spoke at the Holy City Church of God in Memphis the day before the federal holiday named after the civil rights leader.

“I’m here to pay a debt of honor and respect to a man who from walking the dirt roads of the Deep South, to speaking to hundreds of thousands on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, touched the hearts of the American people and led the civil rights movement to triumph over Jim Crow," Pence said.

Before the service, Pence toured the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, where King was fatally shot on April 4, 1968, while standing on a balcony.

how much of a stretch is it to think he'd turn his back on our Constitution for more political / economic gain?

As a gay athiest, he represents the biggest threat to myself from all of them. most of them just want me to go hide somewhere so they don't have to acknowledge I exist. Mike Penance and his ilk would rather just shoot me in the head, except for the waste of a good bullet. He was not chosen by accident. He was both insurance against assassination, and the final solution when that orange child gets removed. You think an out of control oligarchy is bad, wait till you see the theocracy that this full on lunatic will unleash...

Pence attends homophobic sermon streamed on White House YouTube channel

Shortly after Vice President Mike Pence addressed the congregation, a pastor claimed that same-sex attraction is caused by “the devil.”

Vice President Mike Pence spoke at a church service Sunday in which religious leaders said, among other things, that homosexuality is caused by "the devil."

The White House streamed the service live, and it’s still available on the official White House YouTube page.

Minutes after Pence promised congregants at the Holy City Church of God in Christ in Memphis, Tennessee, that he would “stand strong for the values that you hold dear,” Bishop Jerry Wayne Taylor launched into a diatribe about the “demonic” nature of homosexuality.

“We have to encourage young men and women to get married,” Taylor said from the pulpit. “It’s a demonic spirit that causes a woman to want to lie with another woman. It’s a demonic spirit that causes a man to be attracted to another man.”

Pence’s office did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.
