National Archives: 'We made a mistake' altering Trump photos

Source: AP

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The National Archives said Saturday it made a mistake when it blurred images of anti-Trump signs used in an exhibit on women’s suffrage.

The independent agency is charged with preserving government and historical records and said it has always been committed to preserving its holdings “without alteration.”

But the archives said in a statement Saturday “we made a mistake.” The archives’ statement came one day after The Washington Post published an online report about the altered images.

The archives said the photo in question is not one of its archival records, but rather was licensed for use as a promotional graphic in the exhibit.

But it was a mistake to do it. Like they didn't think they'd get caught.

This morning I was listening to a recent podcast of NPR's On the Media detailing the changes to what parts of history are now allowed to be talked about and displayed in Poland since the rise to power of a nationalistic right-wing party.

They took over the museums, fired directors committed to presenting an even-handed picture of the past, and changed displays so they made no mention of Polish collaboration with the Nazis' attacks on Jews. They made docents who wanted to stay on the job sign loyalty oaths that they would only present the government-backed view of history.

Poland's not the only country that refuses to show parts of their history of course. It's particularly common among right-wing, nationalistic governments.

Then to learn of the Washington Post's reporting on this. The parallels are chilling. All I know how to do is to pay attention, resist, and pray!

I see it as akin to counterfeiting and altering official documents.

Do not treat this lightly! These people should do time!

20. article title shows a deep problem: "Trump photos"

these are not photos featuring Donald Trump or his coterie of asshole retainers. rather, these are photos of thousands demonstrating against the travesty. we have a serious issue with cultural appropriation by right-wing assholes. hell, they even got hold of the "OK" hand sign. and now apparently Trump essentially owns images of people protesting his ascendancy.

later on, Trump can whine about how the National Archive was removing his name from photos, and he'll point straight at article titles like this one. he'll tweet it out to his followers, and they'll eat it up without reading the article let alone learning a damn thing about the context. and look at the picture our "friends" at the AP use to illustrate the article. they could have picked the one in question, or even similar ones of other anti-Trump protests, but no -- it's practically a Trump campaign booster pic. if this were one's first exposure to the story, one might come away with the impression that this was the altered image and the National Archive altered it to attack Trump.

we have a problem.
