Harry and Meghan will no longer use 'His and Her Royal Highness,' Buckingham Palace says

Source: CNN

London (CNN)The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer use the titles His and Her Royal Highness after announcing they would step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family, Buckingham Palace announced Saturday.

The couple will also repay the Sovereign Grant funds they recently spent to renovate their official residence, Frogmore Cottage -- £2.4 million (about $3 million) of British taxpayers' money, according to figures released last year.

The royal family has been discussing Prince Harry and Meghan's future after the couple made a surprise announcement that they would step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family, split their time between the United Kingdom and North America and become financially independent.

The stunning 6,900-square foot “Megha-mansion” is in the most prestigious areas of West Vancouver offering breathtaking views across the ocean to the city skyline.

An estate agent source in Canada said: “Meghan has expressed an interest in this beautiful house. It would be perfect for her, Harry and little Archie.

“The neighbourhood is known a haven for wealthy people and has a very laid-back atmosphere. I’m sure they would be very happy there, and they would be welcomed with open arms.”

A Vancouver-based property source said: “The house is a real gem in Kitsilano - one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in Vancouver.

“The area is particularly sought after by super-rich and image conscious young achievers.

a couple million for the update of their cottage at Frogmore. Where are all these millions going to come from to buy this home? Does Harry have any marketable skills? Will renounce his royal endowment? Even if he doesn't, how long will this money last with a mortgage and paying his own expenses? Meghan apparently has her own money, but she's hardly among the super-rich.

Now that they have renounced their royal titles, do they have to pay for their own personal security? Or will Canadian taxpayers get stuck with the bill? At least they'll have nationalized health care.

I think these two are in for a rude awakening. Queen Elizabeth probably knows this, too.

that 40M isn't going to last long. While 1-2M would allow most DU'ers to live the high life, it's not much for a couple who are used to living the royal lifestyle. They won't be paupers, but they will have to adjust to a less lavish lifestyle.

Harry may no longer get a stipend from the British people, but he certainly gets a share of the income from his family's assets. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/ceciliarodriguez/2017/11/23/the-british-royal-family-is-worth-88-billion/#7b663bc6629c)

Let's see, what's 1% of 88 billion - enough to buy a 21 million dollar house, for sure.

But it's high time that she welcomes the 21st century. It's been going on for 20 years!

When is everyone finished with their meal? When the queen is finished. Not before or after. Taking your time finishing your fabulous dessert. Too bad. When Liz puts her fork down, EVERYBODY puts their fork down.

When does everyone go to bed? When the queen is ready to go to bed. Not before or after.
Want to retire early with a good book? Tough shit

I believe in being a good guest. I also believe in being a good HOSTESS, not a bully!

I can understand the old gal being upset. She will see Harry and Archie less. But I being a royal ain't all that it's cracked up to be. There's a downside, and Meghan and Harry have decided it's not worth it. I'm sure that's a kick in the head for her majesty.

HRH for active serving full time royals is fair game. Since Harry and Meghan aren't going to be full time royals, seems fair they don't have the title. However Harry has earned his title of Captain in the armed forces.

So they get to keep their titles but can't be called Your Highness? It just struck me as funny that anyone could care about such a thing (and clearly THEY don't).

I wish them a lot of happiness, and hope the spotlight moves away from them soon so they can start their 'regular' lives.

It's incorrect to say they "can't be called Your Highness".

If you're going to nitpick about whether an agreement is "of their own volition", then you seem to believe this is about blackmail, hypnotism or other forms of coercion. For heaven's sake, this is only about royal privileges.

. . .Is one of the true power trips that the Queen can let loose with.

The Duchess of Windsor was deliberately not given that title when she married the abdicated former King Edward. And the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of York were stripped of the HRH when they divorced the Queen's sons, (even though they were still styled Princess of and Duchess of).

I imagine that just giving up the HRH designation must be an unfathomable concept to Her Majesty.

42. Reading another article on the Meghan and Harry news. . .
Sun Jan 19, 2020, 05:52 PM
Jan 2020

Early on in one paragraph, the writer quoted one person as stating "this is seismic". Towards the end, another "royal expert" was quoted as saying "this is really no big deal."

Midway through the article the word, "Distraction", buzzed into my mind. Palace "officials" can claim to be a dither about this situation, but even the negative attention to Meghan and Harry at this point helps to divert from the genuine scandal of Prince Andrew's association with Jeffery Epstein.

It may seem like a complicated game of chess, but I can see the Palace public relations office suggesting the timing and "surprise" decision of the Sussexes as an alternative lightening rod for outrage. Meghan and Harry have been struggling with their situation for awhile. Prince Charles has been making noise about a "streamlined" monarchy for some time.

The glare on Prince Andrew's behavior may have made the Sussexes--especially Meghan--even more uncomfortable. A mutual family drama script about something other than a pedophile could have benefited all parties in the reported "seismic split".

Of course, I may be peddling conspiracy theories here. Or maybe I am just plain cynical. More likely, I have watched one too many episodes of The Crown.

Oh, I know that's not how it's being spun by the royal family.

But that's what's happening. It's disgusting racism that is driving the people who wanted Meghan and Harry to leave.

Racism is a cancer that needs to be excised everywhere it grows.

And the queen is a coward for not addressing the racism head on.
