Winter storm brings heavy snow, ice to Midwest, Northeast

CHICAGO (AP) A winter storm that has already caused trouble at airports in Chicago and Kansas City was expected to bring blizzard conditions to the Plains and Midwest on Saturday and could dump up to a foot of snow in parts of the Northeast on Sunday.
National Weather Service forecasters issued winter weather advisories affecting much of the Midwest and into the Northeast, including heavy snow that could make travel difficult in some areas.
Forecasters also warned of blizzard conditions expected Saturday afternoon in parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa, including wind gusts topping 50 mph (80 kph).
For southern New England, it would be the first significant snowfall of the year, with up to half a foot (15 centimeters) expected in many areas of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Parts of New York state could get up to a foot (30 centimeters) of snow.
Heavy traffic is seen on Interstate I90/I94 in Chicago, Friday, Jan. 17, 2020. Hundreds of flights canceled as winter storm hits city during evening commute Friday, creating sloppy rush hour. (AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh)

(17,911 posts)And if you wait too long, it turns into a massive glacier and takes pick axes to break up. Some of the things I learned quickly when we moved north. Clear the snow soon as you can. Otherwise you end up with a scale model of the Greenland ice sheet until Spring. Down south we just didn't shovel all that much since it was sure to all melt in a few days.

(17,911 posts)Down south, a garage is just another storage area, with cars parked outside. Up here, it's a necessity when it's -5 outside. You feel lucky you have one.

The snow in RI was mostly gone by morning.
